The New York Film Academy in support of the federal government and in collaboration with the practitioners is to set up training shop in Nigeria to improve the quality of Nigerian movie productions.
The academy regarded as the best hands-on film training school in the world is driven by the desire for capital-need spectrum with one of the most fundamental constituents of competent personnel that are prepared to train Nigerians in Lagos and Abuja in the area of quality movie production and spearheading the evolution of a world class film industry.
The office of the Head of Service of the Federation has pledged to support the academy with the Public Service Institute as a take off ground for the academy. Already, the Rivers State government is to send 120 of its indigenes for the training alongside the Niger-Delta Development Commission and Lagos State government.
As Nollywood ventures into the global arena, its performance must meet the acceptable standard for it to stay afloat, competing side by side with the likes of Hollywood and Bollywood. The New York Film Academy will definitely be involved in the shipment of world-class film equipment and tutors to Nigeria to sharpen the skills of participants.
It will also entails the provision of best learning instructions and a veritable operational structure, all with the intention of moulding participants into being able to make best creative decisions and able to extend the frontiers of their creative ability to express an idea or thought in the form of moving images. Popular actress, Stephanie Okereke also believes, "the academy will bring a sense of direction for Nigerian Nollywood stars and also provide a platform for practitioners to go back to the drawing board in order to recreate Nigeria as a good brand."
The academy is to begin in February next year and is poise to train participants to learn about how to shoot short reels to practicalise the knowledge gained. The New York Film Academy will afford the trainees the opportunity to acquire effective social inter-dependence in the filmmaking process away from the margins of knowing how to operate a camera, light, a scene and edit a movie.
Again, the project will essentially cover the technical and social aspects of film-making within the realm of in-depth creativity, equip participants with the latest creativity-driven technical and social in contemporary film-making.
Also prominent as part of the curricular of the study is the use of intuition and fore-sight to access and accomplish production tasks. It will also propel the trainees to lean the use of light, sound and angles to achieve the salient elements of script and scene.
From its inception, the New York Film Academy school has grown from being just a film academy to an institute that have groomed the world and Hollywood best actors, actresses, directors and script writers such as Steven Spielberg, Susan Sarandon and Kelvin Kline. The school originally started by making use of Robert Deniro's Tribeca Film Centre and later moved to its current side in Manhattan, it also boast of another academy in Los Angels in California.
Obviously, Nigeria is set to be the first beneficiary of the repertoire of professionalism associated with film making with the arrival of New York Film Academy. Though, there was not price tag in terms of fees required from participants to registered, it is hope that Nollywood will make itself available to tap from the academy's pool of knowledge in the business of film making so as to inject in the needed creativity and professionalism that has made Nigerian movies redundant.
