Microsoft Nigeria and Hope Youth Corp have engaged preteens and teenagers on a week-long summer camp to inculcate sound values and morals in them, in their determination to ensure that Nigerian youths are empowered to face the challenges of life,
. This year’s event which was held at the Home Science Secondary School, Sango Ota, Ogun state with the theme: “Setting a great example”, is aim at paradigm shift from the old to a new order of moral regeneration.
Ugochukwu Nwosu, Project Manager, Partners in Learning, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa, took the Children on the topic; “career path towards professionalism”.
He encouraged the youths on the importance of legitimate activities on the internet.
Nwosu said that “The internet is the fastest place to get any information in the world you are looking for, but it comes with its negative side. If you indulge in the negative aspects of the internet like; pornography or internet fraud in what is popularly called “yahoo-yahoo”, you will certainly not progress no matter what anybody tells you.
” He added that if as Children they learn to grow within their age, it will help guide their thought from negative content.
“As a professional, I have taken advantage of IT to boost my career to where I am today. Even when people around me are taking the easy way out, thinking it will take them to the top I have been consistent”. He added.
Also among the arrays of facilitators who spoke, was Chris Ogbonnaya, Lead Evangelist of the International Church of Christ, Lagos. The clergyman enjoined the youths to follow positive example in the Bible. From a religious viewpoint, he exposed their minds to the reality that they can set examples like teenagers in the Bible.
Some of the Children express their excitement for being a part of this year’s camp.
Miss. Stella Oluwatimilehin Adebule, 10, JSS1 pupil of International School Lagos, described her time in the camp as a time she would not trade for anything like playing and watching movies at home during this holiday.
“I don’t really miss home like I would do because of the several activities here in the camp. The highlights for me were the early morning devotions and the classes which were interactive. They allowed us ask any question and they were able to answer them. I have really learnt a lot. I will like to come back again next year” she said
Master Tochukwu Anolefo, 13, SS1 student of Caleb International College, also applauded the organisers of the camp.
Anolefo said that “I am already getting use to waking up early to have my devotional prayer. And from what I have learnt here I will go back to set great examples at home and in my school, knowing that we can be great without doing shady things”
Mr. Aduragbemi Williams, the Coordinator of the Hope Youth Corps said the objective of this year’s edition “is aimed at entrenching leadership qualities in the hearts of young men and women because we know that the future of Nigeria depends on them. So there is every need to catch them young and teach them all of these life skills so they keep setting great examples. The unique thing we want these Children to go home with will be godliness and setting great examples as a result”
The Hope Youth Corps is aimed at developing attitudes and characters that are needed in the lives of the leaders of tomorrow.
And this year’s activities offered them an opportunity to enhance their leadership skill training as they were taught various crafts acquisition skills. Other activities were; sports, morning drill exercise, Bible classes and lots of community projects.
