The condition attached to relocation of popular Computer Village at Ikeja to Kontangwa area in Oke-Odo local government of Lagos State by the State government is delaying traders from commencing erection of shops at the new site, Nigeria Communications Week can now reveal.
The traders see the condition as stringent and capable of discouraging them from relocating to the new site hence it is going to cost them double an investment to a virgin land.
Nigeria CommunicationsWeek investigations revealed that the condition attached to the land allocated to Capdan is responsible for the uninteresting attitude being shown by the association towards developing the new site.
The Lagos State government has given the Computers and Allied Products Distributors Association ( Capdan), the umbrella body for traders at the multi-billion naira Computer market, a condition to improvise another market for the present occupants of the Kontangwa market before they can start developing the market.
It was gathered that the move to Kontangwa was fall out of clash of interest among members of the association who felt that the Techpark initiative, a splinter group from Capdan, relocating to Ogun State will amount to loss of tax revenue for Lagos State government, and therefore went to Lagos State government for land.
Promoters of the Techpark have maintained that their intention to move to Ogun State by January next year, when work on the site would have been completed, does not prevent them from being members of Capdan. They maintain that election into various offices of Capdan must be held before any meaningful development can be achieved. Techpark has so far spent over three hundred million naira in building stalls at the 1,200 plots of land earmarked for the market which has reach 70% completion.
The present location of the Computer Village in the heart of the city has brought a lot of security and environment challenges to residents of the area, this has necessitated the effort to relocate to a business environment.
However, Capdan has commenced work at the proposed site for the present occupants of Kontangwa market at Alagbado where the traders will eventually relocate to, in partial fulfillment of the conditions given to the body by the state government before it can start work on its own site.
