Yomi Bolarinwa, director general, Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has charged operators of terrestrial, radio and television stations in the country to make use of the dynamic nature of the country’s growing resources and improve quality of their service.
He said this at a sensitization workshop for broadcasting operators on how to positively project image of the country in line with the seven point agenda of the federal government held in Abuja.
The director general who was represented by Mr. Biodun Ogunsote, director management services at the commission, said that both the radio and television station has fail to live up to the expectation, and has taken the negative side just to satisfied their selfish interest in reportage on issues concerning government.
He expressed worry over the situation and reminded them of rules and laws guiding their operations which the commission may be forced to invoke if the current attitude is not changed.
He urged them to remain focused on the use of modern technology in their operations as well as using qualified and trained hands in their media organization to leap-frog to the next generation of broadcasting.
He solicited for their cooperation in order to move the industry forward. “We need to find ways to trust each other and work in concert for the good of our nation,” he said.
Bolarinwa, reminded both radio and television stations to prepare for the digitalization in the coming year so as to improve in the services and effectively coverage.
Mr. John Orgar Odey, former Minister of Information and Communication, urged all broadcast stations to endeavor to pay their license fees and other financial obligations to government, so as to avoid the mistakes of the past where some stations where closed down for none payment of licensing fees.
He stated that the commission and the ministry will not allow mistakes of the past to reoccur, where levies are not paid leading to serious complications in the broadcasting industry. He advices all stations, private or public to remit their dues to the commission as and when due to avoid complications.
According to him the commission’s code and the laws have given sufficient guidance to broadcasting stations should operate effectively.
In a paper presentation, titled, financing options for radio and television, by Robert Grant, vice president and group head, Telecom, Media and Technology, First City Monument Bank, said communication is necessary and unavoidable. Stressing that financing a station requires skill in the industry as well as good relationship between the governments, cooperate bodies and individuals for productivity.
He therefore urge radio and television stations to work together as one for them to achieved a defined goals, adding that telecommunication has prove a point of connectivity to the growth of business transactions and the economy, which broadcast industry should emulate.
