The House of Representatives team charged with overseeing programmes designed to help Nigeria defeat poverty and achieve its millennium development goals (MDGs) has approved Zain’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.
Hajia Sadauta Sani, chairperson of the Committee, at the recent commissioning of the mobile communications and internet facilities provided for the United Nations’ designated Millennium Village by Zain, Ericsson and the Earth Institute, said that Zain’s endeavour to lift Nigerians out of the poverty as exemplified by its Millennium Village Project in Pampaida, shows that the company genuinely cares about the people and not just interested in profit-making.
According to her, the mobile operator has helped governments and the people of Nigeria to fight poverty by creating employment opportunities through the introduction of various customer-friendly products and services across the country.
“With such a laudable project, Zain has proved that it is not a shylock who is just interested in taking away our money. I have monitored the activities of this company since it commenced service in 2001 and I can say it remained very consistent in empowering Nigerians and improving their wellbeing. Indeed, Zain has been one of the best networks around,” said Hajia Sani.
“The launch of the Millennium Village Project is a very significant step on the road to eradicating poverty. Millennium Village project is about development of communities with extreme poverty. It is about people development and partnership. Experience has shown that partnership between public and private organisations such as this is very effective in the fight against poverty, she added.
The newly commissioned Millennium Village mobile communication (voice and data services) Project provided by Zain, Ericsson and the Earth Institute has made it possible for the villagers of Pampaida to make calls, access health services and education and improve their economic future.
Millennium Village project is a science-based bottom-up approach to lifting rural villages out of the poverty trap that afflicts more than a billion people worldwide. The community-drive initiative currently operates in 10 sub-Saharan African countries where it tackles challenges related to health, education, nutrition, livelihoods, gender equality and other vital issues.
