Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, vice chancellor of the University of Lagos (Unilag), has commended Zain Nigeria for its commitment to the development of the country’s education sector, through its popular, international quiz show, Zain Africa Challenge.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony in honour of the school’s representatives at the National Qualifying Tournament of Zain Africa Challenge, Sofoluwe described the on-going academic show as engaging as well as a potent tool to motivate and build the confidence of African youths.
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by Professor Modupe Ogunlesi, deputy vice chancellor, Academic and Research, commended Zain for introducing the unique quiz show, adding that success in life starts from developing the mind.
The University don also thanked Zain for rewarding each of the school’s representatives with cash prizes. “I want to thank Zain Nigeria for this wonderful cash gift and for developing our students’ confidence because success in life starts from building the mind. With this gesture, Zain as an organization is, indeed, motivating both parents and students”, he said.
The prize presentation ceremony, which was held at the Vice Chancellor’s Office, also included cash donations to both the coach and liaison officer. The university was represented by Ikechukwu Sampson Edeagu, a fourth-year Physics student; Harry Porter, a fourth year Chemical Engineering undergraduate; Emmanuel Uchechukwu Nwokoma, a 600 level Medical undergraduate as well as George Eberechukwu Onyenekwu, 400 level Dentistry student.
The students were coached by Professor Solomon Akinboye of the Political Science Department, while Mrs. Aderonke J. Asiwaju, the Principal Assistant Registrar coordinated administrative matters for the school at the National Qualifying Tournament.
In his response, Akintunde Giwa, regional Sales Manager, Zain Nigeria, Lagos Region, praised the students of the University of Lagos for their achievements at the National Qualifying Tournament and further urged them to put more efforts in the next edition so that they will be among the selected Nigerian Universities that will fly the country’s flag in the International festival in Uganda.
The University of Lagos alongside 15 other universities was selected by the National Universities Commission to participate at the National Qualifying Tournament (NQT) of Zain Africa Challenge Season 4. The selected Universities were Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Bowen University; Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Katsina State University (now Musa Yar’ Adua University), Katsina.
Others were Niger Delta University; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife; University of Abuja; Ambrose Ali University; University of Calabar; University of Jos and University of Maiduguri.
Others are Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; Federal University of Technology, Akure; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Lagos, Akoka and University of Ibadan also participated in the tournament.
Eventually, University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka; University of Abuja; University of Maiduguri and University of Jos (UNIJOS) qualified for the Season IV of the Zain Africa Challenge. The five Nigerian Universities are currently competing with other Universities in Africa for the prestigious Season 4 trophy.
