Nigeria Communication Satellite (NigComSat) Limited has warned Internet users to be cautious of malicious and dangerous websites.
This is coming as Nigeria marks international cybersecurity awareness month this October.
Dr Abimbola Alale, managing director and chief executive officer, NigComSat stated this in a press release signed by Adamu Idris, general manager, Corporate Affairs, in commemoration of the International cybersecurity month.
She listed some tips to guide Internet users and advised them to take precaution in the cyberspace.
Alale explained that the cyberspace was full of malicious codes, links, trojans and viruses, saying that millions of unsuspecting users were increasingly becoming vulnerable to these threats.
She said, “As we embark on the cybersecurity awareness month, we are bringing to your notice some tips that could keep you safe on the Internet.”
She urged Internet users to cultivate the habit of securing their devices by using strong passwords and biometric features if possible.
The NigComSat MD emphasised that though using strong password was desirable, it was also important to use two or multi-factor authentication system as it comprised of two or more layered protections.
She cautioned the public to desist from connecting into public networks but to connect to secured and trusted or private networks if possible, especially when handling financial or any sensitive transactions.
Speaking on data management, users are informed to back up their data periodically.
“It is very crucial to back up your data, remember malicious threats and hackers do not always want to steal just your data, but sometimes the game plan is to encrypt or erase it to either cause you harm or can leads to ransom seeking,” Alale added.
“Malicious links can do damage in several ways; so the public are asked to be sure to inspect links and ensure that they are from trusted senders before clicking.”
She urged Internet users to ‘think before you click’, adding that “clicking on the wrong link, could cost you dearly.”
Alale noted that phishing attack, which she described as one of the greatest cybersecurity threats, could be avoided by updating connected systems regularly to keep software protected from bugs and other vulnerability.
According to her, Internet users should endeavor to use good antivirus software and firewall solution.
