Mohammed Abubakar, inspector–general of Police, has pledged the Nigeria Police Force to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) which is enrolling Nigerians in the National Identity Number (NIN) project.
Abubakar who made the pledge after being enrolled for the scheme at the police headquarters also called on all Nigerians especially the members of the Nigerian police to key into the NIN enrolment exercise as this will help in eradicating crime, fraud, identity theft, makes it difficult for criminals to use false or multiple or ghost identities, and will enhance the work of the police force.
The Inspector–General called for a mutual co-operation between the Nigerian Police and the NIMC.
In his response, Dr. Chris Onyemenam, director-general, NIMC, thanked the Inspector General for his support towards the NIN enrolment exercise.
Onyemenam, noted that a National Identity Database would no doubt facilitate efforts made by security operatives to curb criminal activities in the country
He called on Nigerians and all legal residents in the country to take advantage of the enrolment centres in the states, and local government areas across the country and have their information captured in the single National database.
While presenting the Inspector-General of Police his NIN slip after his registration, Onyemenam urged him never to divulge his National Identity Numbers [NIN] to anyone as it was to him and must be kept secretly
The Director also explained to the Abubakar how to keep track of the progress of his Identity Card [when issued] through the tracking ID
He added that the commission has set-up a pre-enrolment portal which allows individuals to access the pre-enrolment form through the portal [www.ninenrol.gov.ng] for self enrolment.
He encouraged members of the police force and the general public to log into the portal, and fill the form properly and thereafter print out the 2D Barcode, then visit any NIMC enrolment centre nearest to them for the Biometric[ that is the capturing of the finger prints and the facial photo] to complete the enrolment process
