International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has perfected plans to connect persons with all kinds of disabilities to opportunities offered by information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of ITU who announced this on the occasion marking this year’s world telecommunication and information society day, observed that the phenomenal growth of ICTs over the past years has seen the birth of array of new technologies to empower people with disabilities.
He added that it will also afford them opportunity to play active roles in mainstream society.
"ICTs have the great merit of serving as a powerful equalizer of abilities, empowering persons with disabilities to fulfill their potential, realize their own dreams and ambitions and take their rightful place as active members of the information society", Toure said.
The secretary-general said there is ability in disability, calling on able bodied people all over the world to change their attitude and approaches to persons with disabilities, ensuring that all fundamental rights and freedoms are accorded, including the right to fully participate in the information society.
