NCC Compile Dropped Call Statistics

In a measure aimed at improving the quality of services offered by telecommunications operators in the country, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has begun the compilation of dropped call rates.
Operators found wanting in service provisioning will face the regulator’s hammer and may be made to refund subscribers.
Dropped call is the common term for a wireless mobile phone call that is terminated unexpectedly as a result of technical reasons, including presence in a dead zone.
One reason for a dropped call is when the mobile phone moves out of range of a wireless network.
Experts said that occasionally calls are dropped upon handoff between cells within the same provider’s network. This may be due to an imbalance of traffic between the two cell sites’ areas of coverage. If the new cell site is at capacity, it cannot accept the additional traffic of the call trying to "hand in.
Dora Akunyili, minister of information and communication said that the compilations of dropped calls was has been initiated as wireless subscribers i were not satisfied with the service quality provided by the incumbent operators.
Considering the huge profits earned by the telecom operators, Akunyili primarily asked them to reduce call tariffs and address problems such as infrastructure sharing, drop calls, interconnectivity, poor voice signal quality, poor reception, national roaming, number portability, convergence of technology and services, and deployment of fixed-lines.
