Charles Onwubiko, chief strategy officer and chief executive officer, Beacon Media Network has urged the courier professionals to always imbibe standards of practice.
Speaking to Nigeria CommunciationsWeek during the Nigeria Courier Summit held in Lagos, hold tenaciously that the industry ought to be self regulating in anticipation of the Postal Commission. He added that only the practitioners can presently launder the industry’s image to attract customers.
He said: “The industry players also need to be truthful to them selves. They need to need to demonstrate. They need to raise their ethics in practice and embark on training and re-training to keep abreast on new innovations.
“It is natural for the industry to have an independent regulator. Before now it was Postal and Telecom, and with the advent of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), the telecom sector has moved on. If care is not taken what happened to Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) may be repeated in NIPOST because it would have been overwhelmed by a number of issues. It wouldn’t have achieved a lot, because it is regulating the industry where it is a player. In the industry where I belong to, we have APCON; in the films industry there is the Censors Board. You cannot be a regulator and a player and achieve maximum success. One fate must defeat the other.
“As a country we heed to project ourselves to the other parts of the world; this is what is obtainable in Japan, United States, United Kingdom and others. If we are copying America in different policies, why can’t we borrow a leaf from them on the postal reform?”
He added that the policy will spur investment in the country, create jobs and harmonize issues that affect the industry and other sectors, like the security and Customs.
