Senator Sylvester Anyanwu, chairman, senate committee on communications, has described the current state of Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (Nitel), a beleaguered public institution as a disaster.
He also took a swipe on Nigerian Postal Service (Nipost) for trailing behind the revolution in the information and communications sector.
According to him, the sale of Nitel to Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) and PentaScope created a long and tumultuous period of uncertainty.
"It has also raised more fundamental questions bothering on the general principles guiding our national development policy, and the guidelines for utilization of and accountability for public funds," he said.
Anyanwu also took a swipe on the Nigerian Postal Service (Nipost) adding that though, the advances in communication seem to have made postal mail obsolete.
The committee chairman assured that this will not be the case because the postal service still serves a veritable purpose and is therefore unlikely to become obsolete.
"The truth is that its nature will change and it is this change that we must prepare for", the chairman said.
Nipost, he added, would continue to be the main agency in the country for postal sector. This, according to him, imposes on it an enormous responsibility of ensuring a seamless and efficient delivery of mails.
