60% of Global eWaste Ends Up in Landfills

Electronic wastes (e-wastes) have remained troubling issue in both developed and developing economies as more than 20 million tons of e-waste are produced annually, only 40% of which is recycled; 60% of global e-waste ends up in landfills, according to

E-waste refers to electronic appliances such as mobile phones, computers, and televisions that have been discarded.

Recycling e-waste is not just good for the environment. According to a Zion Research report, global demand for e-waste management will reach USD58 billion in 2021, up from USD17 billion in 2015.

80% of consumers want smartphones to last and be easy to fix, and over half of consumers want manufacturers to release fewer phone models and do more to help them recycle their old devices, according to a new Greenpeace survey of 6,000 people from USA, China, Mexico, Russia, Germany and South Korea.

Tackling E-waste
A revised European Union Directive on Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE), which came into force this year, requires Member States to collect 45% of electronic equipment sold. By 2019, the collection target will jump to 65% of equipment sold – or 85% of WEEE generated.

A parliamentary panel in India recently called for separate legislation to make e-waste disposal at designated collection centres mandatory, saying that the present e-waste management system set up under the Environment Protection Act 1986 is not effective.

E-waste is now one of the most rapidly growing environmental problems in both developing and developed countries.

In 2014, nearly 41.8 million metric tons of e-waste was generated and this is expected to grow to 50 million metric tons by 2018. The increasing incidents of indiscriminate e-waste dumping is the incentive for responsible management of discarded ICT devices worldwide.

Malcolm Johnson, deputy secretary general at the ITU while speaking at a joint United Nations workshop on sustainable management of e-waste during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva earlier in the year, observed that e-waste is generated by a wide variety of obsolete and discarded ICT devices.

He said that while these devices have brought the benefit of new innovative technologies, they have also inflicted humanity with the burden of growing quantities of e-waste – a “self-created evil”.

Building Effective Partnerships
To enable better recycling the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) reiterated the need for standards and policy that set requirements for disassembly and material separation, avoidance of glue and welding, and labeling of the materials used in a product.

This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the targets under Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, the WSIS Action Line C.7 on e-environment, and the ITU’s “Connect 2020 Agenda” which calls for minimizing the negative impact of ICTs on the environment, in particular by reducing the volume of redundant e-waste by 50% by 2020.

Johnson said, “The relevant UN agencies need to work together and I am pleased to say we are doing so. ITU, the Secretariat of the Basel Convention, the Basel Convention Regional Centre for South America, UNU, WHO, WIPO, UNIDO, ECLAC and UNESCO have developed a report outlining the state of e-waste management in Latin America. This report offers guidance on the steps to be taken towards environmentally sustainable e-waste management.

ITU has also proposed to the UN Environmental Management Group the creation of an Issue Management Group to enhance coordination on e-waste within the UN system.

ITU standards and guidelines
As an international standards developing organization, ITU also continues to develop standards on rare metal recycling from discarded ICT devices. The recovery of precious metals and critical materials from these products represents a significant economic opportunity but often missed.

For example, ton of gold ore yields just 5 g of gold, whereas a ton of used mobile phones yields a staggering 400 g of gold.

Hydrogen Hosts Catalyst Workshop, Highlights Resilient Business Models for Fintech Startups

Moderated by Miracle Ezechi, Digital Marketing Manager, Hydrogen, the panel session addressed dominant issues about the theme: ‘Adapting Fintech Business Models to Economic Climes: Flexibility, Agility and Customer-centricity’.

Mr. Emeka Awagu, Chief Technology Officer, Hydrogen, who spoke as a panellist, addressed the issue of customer-centricity, which according to him, is key to Fintech growth.

He advised startups to listen to customer demands and understand their needs in order to develop the right solutions that will lead to long term market viability.

“Innovation is key for startup growth. However, understanding customers’ needs and change in behaviour will help any startup to innovate better.

“Startups must be flexible and agile to develop solutions with high interoperability and processing speed, and they must be ready to learn from startups that have failed,” Awagu said.

With an estimated 61.07 percent of startups failing, the participants stressed the need for prudence.

“Statistically, a staggering number of startups fail, often due to financial mismanagement. Hence, founders must prioritise understanding and maintaining a healthy the Cost-to-Earnings ratio.

“It is not just a number, but a pivotal indicator of a company’s financial health as well as being a key attractiveness determinant for investors,” Awagu added.

On his part, Ina Alogwu, the Group Director, Digital Transformation, ARM HOLDCO, who also spoke as a panellist at the session, stressed the need for startups to develop sustainable products and solutions that will help them remain competitive in an environment that is faced with harsh economic realities.

“Many startup businesses fail within their first five years, however upcoming startups should not be discouraged, rather develop a culture that will encourage them to understand the reasons for failure and learn from mistakes.

“Startups should not be too rigid with their solutions and should be ready to accept changes that will drive innovation,” Alogwu stated.

SOPHiA GENETICS Announces Syndicate Bio as First Liquid Biopsy Customer in Africa

SOPHiA GENETICS, a cloud-native software company in the healthcare space and a leader in data-driven medicine, has announced that Nigeria-based Syndicate Bio has signed on to implement MSK-ACCESS® powered with SOPHiA DDM™.

Syndicate Bio is the first lab in Africa to adopt the MSK-ACCESS® assay via the SOPHiA DDM™ Platform, and the first company to make comprehensive genomic profiling and liquid biopsy widely available to patients throughout the entire continent.

There are roughly 1 million new cancer patients each year in Africa and currently, comprehensive genomic profiling and liquid biopsy testing options are not widely available.
