Blackberry, Tecno Phantom Top Best of 2013 Purchases on Jumia

Online shopping habits in Nigeria have grown over the last year, with Nigerian’s shopping for everything from big to small items across the country, according to Jumia.com.

In 2013, the shopping trend in Nigeria did not only focus around the purchase of Fashion Items, but the business saw a massive increase in the purchase for Gadgets, Electronics Books, Home Appliances, Groceries, Beauty Products, Baby Products, Event Tickets Online, with Nokia Lumia, BlackBerry and Tecno Phantom 111 leading the mobile devices purchased via the platform.

With the data gathered from its website in 2013, Jumia.com on Thursday listed top 10 products across categories showing how Nigerians shopped last year. They include: 1. Mobile Phones (Nokia Lumia, Blackberry, Tecno Phantom), 2.  Samsung & LG Televisions, 3. Dresses, 4. Dell Laptops&InfinixTablet, 5. Male Shoes, 6. LG Washing Machine, 7. Elizabeth Arden Perfumes, 8.Accidental Public Servant Book byNasir El Rufai; 9. Mama Gold Rice and 10.  Bathroom Towel

According to Olamide Amosu , offline marketing, PR & events officer for Jumia.com said that, “Nigerians love shopping and tend to get excited along with the high demands for the hottest gadgets, especially when they have been launched in America.

“They start looking for where to buy the gadget and the first place they check online is Jumia.com.ng. In this case in 2013 Jumia Nigeriaimplemented an online pre-order option allowing customers to pay ahead to receive the latest gadgets when they are released in other countries. JUMIA tried this new feature with Blackberry Q10, Samsung Note 3, PlayStation 4 and more gadgets. It proved to be a success,with high subscription rates and customer interest”.

Amosu added that, “The business also noticed that shopping trends are apparent with festive seasons. Nigerian’s will buy specific types of products at celebratory times of year around gift ideas to spoil themselves and their loved ones. During the 2013 Christmas holidays, we identified a new trend where Nigerians bought a lot of bags of rice and oil to give out to their older members of their families along with clothing, home appliances and gadgets for their own personal use”

Jumia provides its customers with a one stop shopping experience that is convenient, safe and stress-free. Jumia has become Nigeria number one ecommerce platform, with every day, over 200,000 unique visitors and a daily subscriber base of over 400,000 people.

Jumia secured with its partners Kaymu, Vamido and Hellofood $35M in funding from MILLICOM. Before this JP Morgan made a significant investment in the business, followed by Summit Partners with $26M.

Cybervergent, a foremost technology company providing automated cybersecurity solutions, in its Quarterly Brief has revealed a troubling trend in the financial sector that shows a spike in attacks utilising the deceptive Remote Control and Surveillance Access Trojan (Remcos RAT) in Q1, 2024.

The findings affirm a stark forewarning to the financial institutions and organisations in the African continent, urging heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate potential escalating risks.

Previously marketed as a legitimate software, Remcos got co-opted by malicious actors and is now a prevalent tool in cybercrime campaigns. This remote access tool grants attackers hidden entry into victims’ devices, allowing them to seize control, pilfer sensitive data, and even introduce stealth backdoors to compromise entire systems. The capabilities of Remcos are diverse and frightening, ranging from disabling vital security features like User Account Control (UAC) to covertly recording user activities.

“As vigilant cybersecurity gatekeepers, we have observed a significant surge in attacks leveraging the Remcos RAT malware,” said Gbolabo Awelewa, the Chief Solutions Officer, Cybervergent. “Financial institutions are particularly targeted due to the sensitive nature of their data and assets. Organisations must remain diligent and adopt proactive monitoring measures to safeguard against such threats.”

The proactive approach adopted by Cybervergent’s Cyber Operations Centre involves meticulous analysis of attacker tactics, constant updating of threat intelligence, and implementing robust endpoint security solutions. These measures are designed to detect, prevent, and neutralise Remote Access Trojans like Remcos, ensuring the continued security and compliance of organisations in the face of evolving cyber threats.
