Many global service providers are deploying 4G technologies to address consumer and business users’ strong demand for wireless services and content.

Cisco has predicted  that by 2018, 4G connections will support 15 percent of all connections, up from 2.9 percent in 2013.

This was contained in the Cisco® Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2013 to 2018.

In many emerging markets, service providers are creating new mobile infrastructures with 4G solutions, the Company said. In some mature markets, service providers are supplementing or replacing legacy 2G or 3G solutions with 4G technologies.

4G connections will also support 51 percent, or 8 exabytes per month, of total mobile data traffic, up from 30 percent, or 448 petabytes per month, in 2013 and 4G traffic will grow 18-fold from 2013 to 2018, a 78 percent CAGR.

On Wi-Fi offload traffic surpasses cellular traffic, which refers to traffic from dual mode devices and supports cell and Wi-Fi connectivity, excluding laptops) over Wi-Fi and small cell networks, the Cisco VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast (2013-2018) mobile offload projections include traffic from public hotspots and residential Wi-Fi networks.

Offloading occurs at the user or device level when one switches from a cell connection to Wi-Fi and small cell access.

More mobile data traffic will be offloaded onto Wi-Fi from mobile-connected devices (17.3 exabytes per month) than will remain on mobile networks by 2018 (15.9 exabytes per month).

By 2018, 52 percent of global mobile traffic will be offloaded onto Wi-Fi/small cell networks, up from 45 percent in 2013.

Commenting on the possibilities, Mr. Dare Ogunlade, general manager, Cisco, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra-Leone said that “Global mobile data traffic will continue its truly remarkable growth, increasing nearly 11-fold over the next five years, to reach an amount in 2018 that is more than 57 times the total amount of mobile data traffic just a few years ago in 2010.

“Such growth is not only indicative of mobility becoming a critical characteristic of almost every network experience and the value consumers and businesses alike place on it, but it also represents the immense opportunities ahead for service providers who sit at the center of the Internet of Everything.”

On global mobile application analysis, Cisco said that video remains on top.

Thus, mobile video traffic will increase 14-fold from 2013 to 2018 and will have the highest growth rate of any mobile application category.

By 2018, mobile video will be 69 percent of global mobile traffic, up from 53 percent in 2013. Web and other data applications will be 17 percent of global mobile traffic, down from 28 percent in 2013.

Also, streaming audio will be 11 percent of global mobile traffic, down from 14 percent in 2013 and file sharing will be three percent of global mobile traffic, down from four percent in 2013.

The Cisco VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast (2013-2018) relies upon independent analyst forecasts and real-world mobile data usage studies.

Upon this foundation are layered Cisco’s own estimates for mobile application adoption, minutes of use, and transmission speeds.

Key enablers such as mobile broadband speed and device computing power are also factored into Cisco mobile VNI projections and findings.

Cisco is the worldwide leader in IT that helps companies seize the opportunities of tomorrow by proving that amazing things can happen when you connect the previously unconnected.

In a recent revelation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Airtel Nigeria has emerged as a standout performer in the country’s telecommunications sector, marking significant gains in market share over the past year.

According to the NCC data, by the end of March 2024, Airtel Nigeria has grown its market share over the last year into a remarkable 29%, solidifying its position as a leading telecom provider in the region.

In stark contrast, other mobile network operators such as MTN and 9mobile have faced considerable setbacks, with MTN witnessing a notable 3.19% decline in market share and 9mobile experiencing a 0.5% decrease.

Even Glo, a prominent player in the market, saw a decline, albeit less pronounced, with a 0.58% drop in its share of internet subscribers.

Airtel Nigeria’s success story goes beyond market share gains. The company has also witnessed a substantial surge in its share of internet subscribers, boasting an impressive 165% basis points increase.

This surge correlates with the launch of Airtel 5G, which the company began rolling out in June 2023 and underscores the telco’s continued push to grow its customer base nationwide.

Airtel Nigeria’s ascendancy in the telecom market comes at a pivotal moment when mobile network operators face challenges of rising operations cost and exchange rates volatility. The company’s recent results solidify its position as a frontrunner in Nigeria’s telecom landscape.
