Airtel Crosses 60m Customers’ Mark in Africa

Bharti Airtel ,a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, today celebrated its 60 millionth customer in Africa.
The company, which recently moved up one notch in global rankings to become the fourth largest mobile operator in the world in terms of subscribers, added 10 million customers across its operations in 17 African countries in less than 12 months of having crossed 50 million subscribers.
“Since launching the Airtel brand in Africa in 2010, Airtel has been on a steady growth path,” explains Andre Beyers, Chief Marketing Officer, Airtel Africa.
“The ability to communicate with each other is no longer a privilege on this continent, but a necessity. Airtel remains committed to ensuring that it continues to provide innovative and relevant communications solutions to all, which positively impacts as many lives as possible.” Beyers also said.
Airtel has remained steadfastly committed to providing customers with telecommunication services that make lives easier.
Since celebrating its 50 millionth customer, the company has embarked on a journey to build the largest 3G network across the continent.
To date, the company has rolled out its 3.75G network to 14 countries.
Reaching speeds of up to 21 mbps, Airtel’s 3.75G network is one of the fastest available globally and will be immensely beneficial to large Corporates, Small and Medium Businesses and the Youth.
“Access to telecommunications plays a crucial role in driving economies within Africa,” explained Beyers.
He said “This includes access to both voice and data services. The biggest transformation on the continent is in bridging the digital divide and connecting the continent to the rest of the world; this remains Airtel’s commitment to the communities that we serve.”
With the recent launch in Madagascar and Burkina Faso, Airtel Money, Airtel’s mobile money platform, Airtel Money, is now live in 14 countries across Africa.
The service, allows communities to take maximum advantage of the mobile commerce reality sweeping through the industry by enabling them to conduct a range of financial transactions quickly, securely and easily.
A Commitment to the Environment
Perhaps one of the most notable achievements is that the company has placed equal importance on reducing its carbon footprint. As part of its commitment to the environment Airtel has undertaken a series of ‘green’ initiatives that deliver tangible results.
Over the last year, it has reduced the number of sites running solely on diesel by more than 50 per cent through the use of innovative models such as a Hybrid Battery Bank
By 2013, the Company aims to completely eradicate the constant use of diesel to power its network. This means no site will rely solely on diesel power 24 hours a day.
“As a global company we need to ensure that we stay committed to the long-term well being of the environment in order to be truly successful and make a positive impact on the community,” continued Beyers.
Beyers said “Reaching this goal will be a huge accomplishment for us, and we intend to do whatever it takes to ensure that we completely reduce our dependence on diesel power and instead focus on alternative forms of energy like solar power.”
A commitment to the Society
Despite the company’s growing commercial success, Airtel remains focused on making a positive impact on the communities in which it operates.
As part of this initiative, Airtel works with the respective Education Ministries in each country to identify schools in need of refurbishment and educational facilities in order to create a better learning environment for students.
To date, the company has adopted 30 schools through its ‘Our School’ initiative across the continent, with plans to adopt up to 45 schools by April next year.
Earlier this year, the company also kicked off its second season of the Airtel Rising Stars tournament – Africa’s largest grassroots football tournament that aims to nurture and develop local talent from a grassroots to a national level. The tournament is supported by world-renowned football clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal.
Road to the Future
Though Airtel has already notched up significant milestones, it remains dedicated to marking more successes in Africa.
Moving forward, the company is hoping to grow its subscriber base on the continent through maintaining a strong focus on rural penetration, innovation and customer responsiveness.

FG Commences 90,000km Fibre Optic Rollout within Weeks

The Federal Government has announced that work will commence within weeks on a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic network expected to connect every state, local government area and ward in Nigeria, marking what officials describe as one of the country’s most ambitious digital infrastructure projects.

Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, disclosed this on Tuesday after briefing President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on the progress of three flagship digital transformation initiatives being implemented by his ministry.
According to the minister, all resource mobilisation and contractual processes for the nationwide fibre project have been completed, paving the way for physical deployment.
“We’re now at the point where, in a few weeks’ time, we should start to lay those fibre, so people will start seeing us around the country deploying the fibre. This is going to transform Nigeria for good,” Tijani said.
He explained that the project would deliver fibre optic infrastructure to every geopolitical zone, state, local government area and ward, significantly expanding broadband access and improving the quality of internet connectivity across the country.
“This is a project where every state, every geopolitical zone, every local government and every ward in this country will be covered with fibre optic cables, which will transform the quality of connectivity,” he added.
Bosun Tijani attributed the progress in the digital economy to a series of reforms approved by President Tinubu, including the designation of digital infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, tariff adjustments and tax harmonisation measures sought by industry operators.
“I think our sector has been extremely fortunate. Mr. President has given us quite a number of things that the sector has been demanding for a long time. Whether it’s the Critical National Infrastructure designation for all digital infrastructure, the slight adjustment in tariff, or the tax harmonisation, these are reforms the industry has long requested.
“I think it’s probably the sector that is most appreciative of this government because when we came in, the sector was contributing between 16 and 18 per cent to our GDP, but today it is tracking close to 21 per cent. That represents significant growth,” he said.
The minister noted that the reforms had also improved the financial performance of major operators in the telecommunications sector.
On efforts to bridge the digital divide, Tijani disclosed that the government would begin deploying about 3,700 telecommunications towers from October to provide network coverage for more than 20 million Nigerians currently living in underserved communities without access to telecom services.
He said the President had approved the project after months of capital mobilisation and planning.
“Today we’re at a point where, before the end of the year, we’ll also start to deploy close to 3,700 towers. It’s taken a lot to put this project together and raise the required capital, but we are now ready to begin deployment around October,” he said.
The minister also announced that Nigeria would officially launch an alphanumeric postcode system on October 1, a move he said would place the country among a select group of nations operating an advanced digital addressing system.
“Nigeria will be amongst maybe 10 or 15 countries in the world with an alphanumeric postcode. It’s the latest design in postcode systems, where we can identify every property in this country. We’re hoping to launch that on the 1st of October,” he said.
Tijani explained that the new system would assign a unique address to every property nationwide, enhancing logistics, accelerating e-commerce, improving emergency response and strengthening public service delivery.
“Inability to locate places comes at a cost. You can imagine what this will do for e-commerce. It means goods can now be delivered in record time,” he said.
He added that integrating the postcode system with existing government identity databases would improve security and make public services more efficient.
“Our alphanumeric postcode is unique because it allows us to assign a unique address to every property. In many countries, such as the UK, postcodes cover clusters of buildings. What we are introducing will uniquely identify every building, and that will be a game changer for Nigeria in terms of security, commerce and public service delivery,” the minister stated.

Nigeria Tightens Data Privacy Compliance as FG Issues Directive to MDAs

Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to fully comply with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023, as part of efforts to strengthen responsible data governance and build public trust in data-driven public administration.

The directive is contained in Circular No. 59805/S.I/74, dated July 27, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
According to the circular, the directive follows President Bola Tinubu’s instruction that all government institutions must ensure the rigorous collection and secure management of personal data in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
The President was quoted as saying: “Data is the new oil: its value increases the more it is refined and responsibly shared. I therefore direct all Ministries, Extra-Ministerial Departments and Agencies to capture information rigorously and safeguard it under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.”
The circular mandates MDAs to ensure full compliance with the NDP Act, its regulations, guidelines and directives issued by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) regarding the processing of personal data.
To achieve this, every MDA is required to appoint a suitably qualified Data Protection Officer (DPO) responsible for overseeing compliance and advising management on lawful data processing practices.
The agencies are also required to register the names and contact details of their designated DPOs with the NDPC and engage licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), where necessary, to support compliance and conduct statutory data protection audits.
In addition, the Federal Government directed MDAs to make adequate budgetary provisions for data protection compliance activities, including staff capacity building, awareness programmes, deployment of technical safeguards and periodic compliance audits.
The circular further requires all MDAs to submit mandatory Data Protection Compliance Audit Returns and other statutory reports to the NDPC within the timelines stipulated by law.
It also places responsibility for compliance squarely on the leadership of government institutions.
According to the circular, Permanent Secretaries, Accounting Officers and Chief Executive Officers of all MDAs will be held personally accountable for ensuring full compliance with the directive and the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Reacting to the development, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, commended the administration of President Tinubu for demonstrating strong legal and political commitment to protecting the privacy and fundamental rights of data subjects in Nigeria.
Olatunji said the Commission remained committed to supporting government institutions in implementing effective data governance frameworks, noting that data accountability is critical to achieving the administration’s eight Presidential Priorities.
He disclosed that the NDPC had established a regulatory clinic to provide technical guidance and support to MDAs in meeting their compliance obligations.
According to him, the initiative is part of ongoing regulatory measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s data governance ecosystem as the country positions itself to harness opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
