13 New Things Google Launched at I/O 2025

Across Africa, more and more people are finding themselves interacting with artificial intelligence every day, perhaps without even realizing it. From the personalized recommendations that pop up on their phones to the smart assistants helping them manage their schedules, AI is quietly becoming an indispensable part of modern life.
This widespread adoption underscores a global trend: AI is evolving from a complex theoretical concept into practical, helpful tools that solve real-world problems and enhance our capabilities.
It’s against this backdrop that the annual Google I/O conference takes center stage. Google I/O is Google’s flagship event featuring the latest announcements and updates in technology. It’s Google’s moment to reveal the future they’re building, pulling back the curtain on their newest products, technologies, and, most significantly this year, their breakthroughs in AI. This is where ambitious research prototypes often make their public debut, demonstrating how AI is moving from the lab into everyday tools designed to enrich our lives.
This year’s proceedings highlighted the ongoing advancements in Google’s AI capabilities, with its most advanced models, Gemini, being extensively integrated across its product offerings and research initiatives. A central theme observed was the development of artificial intelligence intended to be not just powerful but also beneficial, designed to be more intelligent, more capable of taking action on behalf of users (referred to as ‘agentic’), and more uniquely tailored to individual needs and preferences (personalised). Building on previous developments, Gemini has now been incorporated into every one of Google’s 15 products that collectively serve over half a billion users. The innovations unveiled at I/O 2025 suggest a focus on expanding the scope of AI applications and making artificial intelligence broadly more useful and intuitive for a wider audience.
Here are 13 of the new AI-powered tools, features, and advancements announced at Google I/O 2025 and how they are designed to assist you:

10. Personalized Search Results Delivered
Soon, AI Mode in Labs will offer personalized suggestions based on past searches, making the search experience more relevant. Users can also optionally connect other Google apps, starting with Gmail, to provide personal context for tailored responses, such as restaurant suggestions based on booking history when planning a trip. This feature is always under the user’s control, allowing for connection or disconnection at any time. AI Mode will also be able to analyze complex datasets and create custom charts and graphs for data visualization in sports and finance queries, coming to Labs this summer, aiding in clearer information understanding.
11. Smarter Shopping Experiences in AI Mode Unveiled
The new shopping experience in AI Mode combines Gemini model capabilities with Google’s Shopping Graph to help users browse for inspiration, consider options, and narrow down products more efficiently. This includes a new “try-on” feature allowing users to virtually try on billions of apparel listings by uploading their own image, beginning its rollout to Labs users in the U.S. today, making online shopping more confident. Users can also ask an agentic checkout feature to make purchases with Google Pay when the price is right, with their guidance and oversight. This shopping experience is expected to be available in AI Mode in the U.S. in the coming months.

Temu Strengthens IP Protection with IACC Partnership to Combat Counterfeiting

Temu, the global online marketplace, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC) to deepen collaboration on intellectual property protection and expand efforts to combat online counterfeiting.
The MoU was signed during the IACC’s 2025 Annual Conference in San Diego last week. As part of the collaboration, Temu has joined the IACC’s newly launched Marketplace Advisory Council (MAC) as an inaugural member.
The MAC is a cross-industry forum that includes leading online marketplaces, payment providers, and global brands, aimed at setting a new standard for cooperation in the fight against counterfeit goods.
“We’re pleased to welcome Temu as an inaugural member of the Marketplace Advisory Council and as a key partner in our shared fight against counterfeiting,” said Bob Barchiesi, President, International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition.
“This MoU reflects a meaningful step forward in our collaboration, grounded in transparency, accountability, and a joint commitment to consumer protection.
“The IACC created the MAC to bring stakeholders together in a way that drives real, sustained impact—and Temu’s participation helps strengthen that vision.”
The MAC offers a collaborative platform where e-commerce platforms, payment companies, and brand owners can work together, share insights, and forge stronger partnerships to address one of the digital economy’s most persistent challenges: the proliferation of counterfeit goods online.
“Joining this coalition underscores Temu’s commitment to building a trustworthy online marketplace,” said a Temu spokesperson.
“We look forward to collaborating with other industry leaders to create a powerful, collective force against the sale of illegal goods online.”
Since launching in 2022, Temu has invested heavily in intellectual property enforcement. Measures include:
Comprehensive seller vetting and compliance training
Round-the-clock algorithmic monitoring supported by manual review
A dedicated IP protection portal and brand registry for streamlined takedown submissions
An internal enforcement team handling claims with high speed and accuracy
In addition to Temu, other members of the IACC MAC include e-commerce platforms Amazon, and eBay; payments providers Mastercard, PayPal, and Visa; as well as global brands such as Apple, Chanel, Colgate-Palmolive, Disney, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, and Nike.

MTN Nigeria Drags 20 Banks to Court over N6Bn Debt by SleekChip

MTN Nigeria has taken legal action against more than 20 banks as it intensifies efforts to recover nearly ₦6 billion in interconnect debt from SleekChip Technologies Limited, a licensed international direct access and transit service provider.

Karl Toriola, chief executive officer, MTN Nigeria
This move comes on the back of a court judgment awarding the telecom giant the right to reclaim funds owed through garnishee proceedings.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, ruled in November 2024 that SleekChip must pay MTN $1.97 million—or its naira equivalent at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official rate at the time.
The court also granted interest on the debt at a rate 2% above the Nigerian Interbank Offer Rate, backdated to January 31, 2022, until full repayment is made.
At the heart of the dispute lies a 2019 interconnection agreement between MTN and SleekChip, which permitted the exchange of calls and messages between their networks.
MTN alleged that from January to October 2022, SleekChip accumulated significant unpaid charges.
Despite repeated demand notices and a formal acknowledgment of debt by SleekChip in May 2023, no repayment was made.
With the judgment in hand, MTN has proceeded to enforce it by seeking court orders to freeze and seize SleekChip’s funds held across Nigerian banks.
The telecom operator pegged the naira value of the judgment debt at over ₦3.28 billion based on the exchange rate of ₦1,665.84 to the dollar as of November 7, 2024, with interest claims pushing the amount beyond ₦5 billion.
Court records show that on May 16, 2025, representatives from MTN and several banks appeared before Justice Lifu.
MTN submitted that most banks had filed affidavits disclosing the status of any accounts held by SleekChip.
The court subsequently discharged over 10 banks that confirmed they had no financial ties to the debtor.
Some banks raised objections to MTN’s request to extend searches using the debtor’s BVN, arguing that the court had issued no such order. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 26, 2025, to continue the garnishee proceedings.
This case adds to a growing list of MTN’s debt recovery efforts across Nigeria’s telecom sector. In 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved MTN’s request to disconnect several service providers over similar unpaid interconnect charges—including SleekChip and Exchange Telecommunications.
The ongoing legal enforcement signals MTN’s strategic shift toward reclaiming debts through court-backed recovery rather than relying solely on regulatory pressure.
With mounting operational costs and network expansion demands, telecom operators are becoming less tolerant of defaults, especially in interconnect fee obligations.
