BICSI Nigeria Challenges ICT Stakeholders On Infrastructural Development
The Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) Nigeria has urged ICT stakeholders to assist on initiating and executing standard infrastructure in the country.
BICSI brought together professionals in the telecoms and ICT industry at the 2016 conference and exhibition with the theme “New Frontier”: Nigerian ICT Infrastructure, Standards, Growth & Development held in Lagos.
The one-day event afforded participants with the opportunity to share experiences on topical issues that border around infrastructural development in the ICT sector.
With the requisite support and representation of major stakeholders like the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance & Regulation Agency (LASMIRA) and the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), delegates present at this year’s edition had a balanced evaluation of the telecom and ICT industry.
Boye Oyerinde, BICSI Nigeria Country Chair, aside giving an impressive opening remark also hosted a discussion panel with the focus on “Nigerian Telecoms infrastructure/Quality of service (QoS)”.
The panel of discussion which is a first at any BICSI global event had the representative of Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Engr. Fidelis Onah, NCC Director of Technical Standard and Network Integrity; ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo; Allan Ridley, Commscope Africa and Jide Odekunle, Director-General, Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance & Regulation Agency (LASMIRA) all presenting a robust and pragmatic argument.
Engr. Fidelis Onah, director of Technical Standard and Network Integrity at the NCC, in one of his remarks, asserts that “The continuous drive for improved infrastructure would aid the growth, development and also bring about an increase in our GDP which is necessary for Nigeria to take her place in the league of ICT savvy nations.”
While Jide Odekunle, director general LASMIRA, added that “BICSI Nigeria has embarked on a timely quest that identifies with Lagos State Government initiative in providing adequate regulations that are germane to the development of ICT practice”.
Awards, prizes, and gift items were given out to distinguish personalities and individuals much to the delight of all attendees.
Boye Oyerinde, BICSI Nigeria Country Chair, while thanking all stakeholders for their support in his closing remark stated that “BICSI Nigeria will continue to drive and form a professional opinion for the ICT industry in line with best global practices to yield the much-desired result”.
The 2017 BICSI Nigeria conference and exhibition which will be the third in a row is slated for the 3rd quarter of 2017 in Lagos.
BICSI is a professional association supporting the information and communications technology (ICT) community.
ICT in this regard covers the spectrum of voice, data, electronic safety & security, project management and audio & video technologies.
It encompasses the design, integration and installation of pathways, spaces, optical fiber- and copper-based distribution systems, wireless-based systems and infrastructure that supports the transportation of information and associated signaling between and among communications and information gathering devices.
BICSI provides information, education and knowledge assessment for individuals and companies in the ITS industry. We serve more than 23,000 ICT professionals, including designers, installers and technicians.
These individuals provide the fundamental infrastructure for telecommunications, audio/video, life safety and automation systems. Through courses, conferences, publications and professional registration programs, BICSI staff and volunteers assist ICT professionals in delivering critical products and services, and offer opportunities for continual improvement and enhanced professional stature.

NCC Advises Subscribers to Opt for Strong Passwords to Beat Hackers
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has advised telecommunications subscribers to opt for strong passwords to prevent unauthorized access to their mobile devices.
In a recent update on its official Facebook page, the NCC focused on how cyber-attacks could be prevented, emphasizing the importance of creating strong passwords to safeguard online accounts
The Commission urged subscribers to ensure that they have a password to log in securely.
The NCC wrote on its official Facebook page, “Protect your online accounts (such as banks and digital media) by using strong and complex passwords.”
It believes that by opting for strong passwords, individuals could defend themselves against cyber attacks.

Starlink Users in SA to be Cut Off April 30
Starlink users in South Africa are facing a major setback as the satellite internet service provider has issued a warning that their services will be terminated by the end of the month.
In an email sent to many South African users, Starlink stated that their internet access will cease on April 30 due to violation of its terms and conditions.
The email emphasized that using Starlink kits outside of designated areas, as indicated on the Starlink Availability Map, is against their terms. Consequently, users will only be able to access their Starlink account for updates after the termination.
Starlink, a company owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, operates a fleet of low earth orbit satellites that offer high-speed internet globally. Despite its potential to revolutionize connectivity, Starlink has been unable to obtain a license to operate in South Africa from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).
Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) requirements mandate that any applicant must have 30% ownership from historically disadvantaged groups to be considered for a license.
However, many in South Africa resorted to creative methods to access Starlink services, including purchasing roaming packages from countries where Starlink is licensed.
However, ICASA. clarified in a government gazette last November that using Starlink in this manner is illegal.
Additionally, Starlink itself stated in the recent email to users that the ‘Mobile – Regional’ plans are meant for temporary travel and transit, not permanent use in a location. Continuous use of these plans outside the country where service was ordered will result in service restriction.
Starlink advised those interested in making its services available in their region to contact local authorities.

The SABRE Awards for Superior Achievement in Reputation Management recognizes public relations work that has played a central role in corporate strategy, positioning and messaging.
In its submissions 9mobile demonstrated that its PR professionals took a lead role in creating and developing a corporate reputation platform and explain how that platform shifted perceptions, built stronger stakeholders’ relationships, and ultimately contributed to corporate performance.
