Chams Staff Donate to Prison Inmates

Employees of Chams Nigeria Limited, plastic chips and cards manufacturing company, recently expressed love to Kirikiri Prison inmates, providing them with food and other items to improve their nutrition and encourage positive health conditions while serving their times.
Members of the group who gave up part of their monthly salaries in a charitable venture it named, ‘Chams Soup Kitchen’, said it was a collective idea of like minds that feel for the less privileged, destitute and prison inmates to see that every month; a hand of love is extended to add value to their lives.

However, the group said there was no definite budget for what it was going to spend on monthly basis but that the size and number of recipients at the places marked for visits would determine what an individual member of the group donates.
During the Kirikiri visit, the group said it prepared about six thousand plates of food to cater for inmates in the Kirikiri Female prisons, Minimum, and Maximum prisons; a project which gulped almost a million Naira.

The group said it has also visited Ikoyi prisons, Ebute-Metta destitute home, among others, and plans to visit more Nigerian prisons and destitute homes.

Idowu Logile, corporate communications manager, Chams Nigeria Limited, said that, after observing the trauma that is always associated with the less privileged and the abandonment and hunger that are always the companion of prison inmates, kind spirited members of Chams came together and began to trade ideas on how to help out. At first, the enormous cost implication of the project was a big set back and would have discouraged the start-off of the charitable venture but with the high spirit of the members, the conviction that God is always behind every charitable project and the support of the management of the company, the project became a reality."
"At a time, it was as if all the members of staff of Chams were thinking of the same thing. The level of deprivation, starvation and abandonment in the society was becoming astronomical and if this could affect normal, free and able bodied people like us who in any case were gainfully employed, we were thinking, how would the lives of the less privileged, destitute and the prison inmates fare in this condition?"

"We then came to the conclusion that someone must have to help no matter in what small measure. Here again when we computed the cost, within the little sphere we were thinking of helping out, we were shocked that it was not a small venture in any way. But we thank God that our conviction that He is always behind any charitable project, coupled with the high spirit of members and the full support of the management of Chams, at least we can today realize our objectives," informed Logile.

"Yet we feel we have not even done enough. You can see a lot of things that needed attention inside the prisons, people should not leave everything to the government, we should as individuals and corporate organizations do what we can do to salvage humanity and touch the lives of those that can not help themselves. We have visited the Ikoyi prisons, the Ebute-Metta destitute home among other places and we have a lot of others to visit. At first we planned this to be a monthly routine but you know, as workers, other activities sometimes come in the way but we are surely committed to this."

Federal government on Tuesday announced that it has developed initiatives for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence technology in Nigeria.

FG to Boost Artificial Intelligence

The establishment of a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Nigeria (CFAIR) is also expected soon.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) said that AI applications enable innovative solutions, improve risk assessment, better planning, and faster knowledge-sharing.

Abdullahi Usman Gambo, director of IT Infrastructure Solution, NITDA, spoke at a workshop in commemoration of International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

He noted that AI would open up opportunities for access to information and also help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) in the 2030 Agenda.

Gambo said: “Artificial Intelligence is poised to revolutionize the way we go about our daily lives – from governance to business, legislation to medicine to defence, etc. We can all agree that AI is humanity’s new frontier.

“We have developed initiatives for adoption of emerging technologies such as AI, strengthen cybersecurity, digital skills for digitally excluded citizens while enhancing the regulatory and market environment to increase access to ICTs, and promote seamless access to information.

“We believe AI and associated emerging technologies will completely enhance the speed, efficiency and effectiveness of information gathering during the exchange of data or the ways of communication,” he said.

Delivering his paper, Yushau Shuaib, publisher of PRNigeria, described access to information as the right of the citizens to accurate, transparent, and timely facts and figures.

The former National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman stated that governments at all levels have obligations to communicate with people, while the public has the right to know and criticize authorities through constructive engagement.

The media executive, however, appealed to Nigerians not to use social media platforms for fake news dissemination.

“The merits of new media on affordability, accessibility and instant delivery are occasionally marred by the fact that social media is sometimes used to spread fake news”, he said.

Shuaib called for collaboration of stakeholders in ensuring appropriate legislation through public awareness campaigns in order to improve access to universal information.

“Since inception, it has been the number one goal for us here at CWG because we have always identified the potential for SMEs once they are provided with the right support.

Thus, SMERP was designed to make available enabling tools for all SMEs across Africa at a relatively affordable price and to also make their business operations lean where they can save more resources to increase profitability,” he said.

Dolapo explained that in support of SMEs, SMERP has provided an effective ERP tailored to the SME market, providing services such as Inventory Management, E-commerce platform, Accounting, Point of Sale and Customer Relationship Management tool.
