DStv Celebrates Women on TV March

MultiChoice Nigeria has declared March as women’s month on DStv.
According to Segun Fayose, the company’s head of Corporate Communications, “A series of interesting quality programmes have been packaged to offer subscribers, especially women, optimum viewing pleasure on DStv. Every year, March 8 is celebrated around the world as International Women’s Day. 2010 is no different and TV viewers across Africa can tune in for various programmes featuring and or hosted by women on DStv throughout March.”
He invited subscribers to join CNN’s leading lady, Christiane Amanpour, in her live global interview program, Amanpour, throughout the month. Airing Monday to Thursday (8pm local time), the highly-anticipated interview program, hosted by the internationally renowned and multi-award-winning journalist will aim to set the agenda for a new global conversation. Each half-hour show focuses on a single topic – often news-driven, often provocative – bringing to bear Christiane’s vast journalistic experience and depth of knowledge honed from a quarter of a century reporting from around the world, alongside some of the major influencers and newsmakers of the day. 
Audiences are advised to watch out for Xpress: Lady Gaga (March 12 at 7.30pm local time) on Channel O. The channel brings viewers the music videos of arguably 2009’s biggest global success stories.
The Style Network has programmes for girls that love to keep abreast with the latest fashion. One such programme is Glamour’s 25 Biggest Do’s and Don’ts. It premiered on Sunday March 1 (4pm local time) detailing do’s and don’ts in the fashion industry. The programme will also feature disastrous don’ts such as the denim tuxedo and will give viewers some easy style advice so anyone can become a fashion do!
E! Entertainment’s True Hollywood Story: Basketball Wives (Thursday March 18 at 9pm local time) will give inklings about what it’s really like to be the wife of a big league basketball player. From falling in love to fending off obsessive fans, DStv viewers will be given a play by play account of the women in these sportsmen’s life. It’s no walk in the park trying to raise a family while your husband is playing a grueling 162 game schedule. With unprecedented access, THS: Baseball Wives will focus on the individual careers of the wives themselves and examine the unique challenges that go along with having a husband in the big league.
If you’re the type of woman who loves sexy men and fast cars then you need look no further than SuperSport. On Sunday March 14 the 2010 Formula One season revs off from the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain. What makes this season special is that the world’s most successful driver, Michael Schumacher, makes his comeback to the sport after an absence of three years. Continuing throughout March is all the action from the Southern Hemisphere toughest rugby competition – the Super 14, featuring some of the world’s hottest rugby players.
On the M-Net, viewers will enjoy Hawthorne every Tuesday at 6pm local time (from March 23). Jada Pinkett Smith is Christina Hawthorne, the compassionate and headstrong Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital in this delightful series.
Meanwhile Courtney Cox stars as Jules, in Cougar Town, a recently divorced single mother exploring the honest truths about dating and aging in the beauty and youth obsessed culture. While most women in their twenties go through life experiencing the challenges and often humorous pitfalls of meeting men, Jules took on the responsibilities of marriage and raising a son. Now in her forties, she embarks on a journey to self-discovery whilst surrounded by fellow divorcees and singletons eager to live or re-live a time gone by. Cougar Town airs every Tuesday at 5:30pm local time.
Other must see programs this month undoubtedly has to be Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tyra Banks Show which airs on M-Net throughout March. The lovely ladies of Studio 53, every Sunday on M-Net, will bring audiences a host of fascinating story from all over the globe.
For those hankering after series, Spain on the Road on M-Net Series is a must! Premiering on Saturday 20 March (9pm local time), it is a 13-part travel-cook series featuring Gwyneth Paltrow and Claudia Bassols who set out to find the best of what Spain has to offer in food, art, history, music and everyday life.

Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe State has approved the appointment of experienced casual staff working at Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC) and Yobe State Television (YTV).

This is as part of efforts to ensure enough manpower for the on-going digitization of the two stations.

Abdullahi Bego, commissioner for Information, Home Affairs, and Culture revealed this when the officials of the Radio, Television and Theatre Art Workers Union (RATAWU) paid him a courtesy visit at the office in Damaturu.

Bego said the governor had after approving millions of naira for the total overhauling of the two stations directed for formulation of all strategies that will ensure effective implementation of the digitization process.

The commissioner also said, “His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni is passionate about the digitization process of the media organizations in the state especially when it comes to equipment, staff strength and capability.

“The next step is the training and retraining of the staff of the two media organisations for efficiency in the execution of their job,” Bego disclosed.

He said the casual staffs billed for employment were serving at the stations for more than eight years while others five to six years without permanent appointment letters.

“We feel it is good to employ them taking into cognizance their experience in the system and dedication to duty.”

Bego commended RATTAWU among other members of the organization for their effort in informing, enlightening, and entertaining the public at all times.

Comrade Nasiru Illiya, chairman of RATTAWU, while speaking, said they were at his office to register their gratitude to the giant stride of Governor Mai Mala Buni, especially on the digitization of the two media organisations in the state.

“Sir, we are equally very grateful to note that within your short stay as commissioner of Information, we have started witnessing a positive transformation in the sector through the award of contracts worth millions of naira for upgrading YBC and YTV from analogue to digital transmission

“As I am speaking to you now, YBC is online transmission live,” Illiya disclosed

FirstBank Supports Author on New TV Series

The weekly show – in its first season – is billed to premiere on Africa Magic Showcase this Wednesday.

The Smart Money Woman is a programme that shows the experiences, sacrifices, struggles and vigour of women in society as they carry out their day to day activities in spite of the gender imbalance in the society, especially in Africa.

The series is an adaptation of Smart Money Woman written to tackle debt, providing tips on inculcating the right savings culture of the African middle class (why don’t we say – every individual – as against limiting to African middle class), the fear and misconceptions surrounding money and the lack of it, love, friendships, cultural and societal pressures and the roles they play in success.

The half hour 13-episode series which is directed by Bunmi Ajakaiye and Co-, produced by Kemi Lala Akindoju, Akin Marinho and Arcadia Tv Africa would have viewers exposed to financial literacy nuggets. Its cast include; Osas Ighodaro, Toni Tones, Ini Dima-Okojie, Eby Eno, Eso Okolocha, Timini Egbuson, Karibi Fubara, Tope Tedela, Seun Ajayi and Temisan Emmanuel.

According to Arese Ugwu, author and executive producer, Smart Tribe Media; “The Smart Money Woman is a love letter to every modern and upwardly mobile African women who are exploring life opportunities and experiences to find that right balance in their day to day activities especially in their career, friendship, relationship and of course, family.”
