IBM & Ericsson Make Huge Call Towards 5G Communications Networks

IBM and Ericsson on Monday announced a research breakthrough that could accelerate the launch of 5G communications networks and support new mobile enterprise and user experiences enabled by very high data rates, including IoT, connected vehicles, and immersive virtual reality.
The companies have created a compact silicon-based millimeterWave (mmWave) phased array integrated circuit operating at 28GHz that has been demonstrated in a phased array antenna module designed for use in future 5G base stations.
2017 has been described as a defining year for 5G. More countries and governments are opening up new frequency portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, including portions known as millimeter wave bands, which are more than 10 times higher than the frequencies currently used for current mobile devices, offering a new source of bandwidth for cellular networks that are being made available for 5G networks.
Scientists at IBM Research and Ericsson reached their breakthrough as a result of a two-year collaboration that set out to develop phased array antenna designs for 5G. IBM’s expertise in highly integrated phased array mmWave IC and antenna-in-package solutions, together with Ericsson’s expertise in circuit and system design for mobile communications, helped the team reach several new technological milestones.

New use cases and applications that span human machine interaction, Virtual Reality, smart home devices and connected cars will depend on innovative technologies that can bring the promises of faster data rates, broader bandwidth and longer battery life to reality.”

Making 5G A Reality
The first release of the 3GPP 5G specification is targeted to be ready by 2017/2018, but there has already been much progress in the industry with field tests and demonstrations of new user experiences and capabilities made possible by the higher bandwidth, lower latency, greater density and lower energy requirements of 5G networks.
5G is expected to support data rates exceeding 10Gbps in certain scenarios. New capabilities are designed to allow users to download a full-length HD movie in seconds, provide very high bandwidth and uninterrupted live streaming experiences in highly dense environments such as sports or concert venues, experience ‘life-like’ response times to enable remote surgery or fully immersive virtual reality experiences, as well as see battery life of 10 years for remote cellular devices that may be part of IoT environments.
The Phased Array Antenna Module Breakthrough
For future 5G phased array deployments to be commercially viable the size, weight, cost and performance of the component are important factors.
The IBM and Ericsson team’s result, the world’s first reported silicon-based mmWave phased array antenna module operating at 28GHz, is a significant step towards meeting this challenge. The module, which consists of four monolithic integrated circuits and 64 dual-polarized antennas, measures approximately 2.8” by 2.8”, or about half the size of a typical smartphone. Achieving this compact form factor is necessary to support the vision of this technology’s widespread deployment, especially in indoor spaces and dense downtown areas.
Another performance advance reported by the team is the demonstration of concurrent dual-polarization operation in transmit and receive modes.
This capability enables one phased array antenna module to form two beams simultaneously, doubling the number of users to be served at the same time and so improving the overall value and economics of the technology.
A major hurdle for the use of mmWave signals in mobile communications is achieving sufficient range between radios to support target applications. At 28 GHz, each antenna is tiny and individually would support short communication distances, but combining multiple such tiny antennas not only increases the range but also enables steering of signals in specific directions. The IBM and Ericsson team’s phased array design supports beam-steering resolution of less than 1.4 degrees for high precision pointing of the beam towards users.
IBM Communications Circuits & Systems Innovation
IBM Research has a long history designing and developing integrated circuits and phased arrays, and were pioneers of the first monolithic mmWave radio in 2006. In 2013, the team presented results of a highly integrated mmWave phased array transceiver for both mobile communications and radar imaging applications that laid the foundation for this latest scientific work.
The IBM scientists have also explored how mobile handsets will communicate at new mmWave frequencies, showing a path for how mmWave 5G radios could be implemented in mobile phones.
A paper describing the IBM Research and Ericsson team’s work, “A 28GHz 32-Element Phased-Array Transceiver IC with Concurrent Dual Polarized Beams and 1.4 Degree Beam-Steering Resolution for 5G Communications,” will be presented on February 7 at the 2017 International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco.

Data Is Life: Why MTN Wants You to Get Smarter with Your Data

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s this: life today runs on data. From morning Instagram scrolls to Zoom classes and late-night Netflix binges, we’re constantly plugged in, streaming, scrolling, and sharing. But if you’ve ever wondered, “Why does my data finish so fast?” or seen that dreaded low-balance pop-up just when you need it most, you’re not alone.
At MTN’s Customer Engagement Day 2025, Ugonwa Nwoye, MTN’s Chief Customer Relations and Experience Officer, addressed this reality in a way that felt both practical and deeply relatable. She spoke about how essential data has become, calling it the lifeblood of modern living. “If you don’t have data in today’s world, you feel cut off. Isolated. That’s how important connectivity is,” she said, capturing how many of us feel when we’re disconnected even for a moment.
Her words struck a chord, especially as she shared candidly about her own experiences. She reminded everyone that many apps continue to run in the background, consuming data without our knowledge, and how video-heavy habits, such as endless TikTok reels or video calls, can quickly drain data bundles.
But the heart of Ugonwa’s message wasn’t just about the challenges; it was about empowerment. She emphasised that MTN’s goal is not simply to sell data but to help customers use it better. She explained how MTN is equipping people with the tools they already have on their phones to track usage, teaching simple ways to control consumption and sharing practical tips for managing apps more effectively. “We’re not just telling you your data is finished,” she said. “We want you to know how it was used and how to make it last longer. It’s about giving you control.”
What stood out most was her willingness to listen. Throughout the session, she engaged directly with real complaints and questions from the audience, from why smaller bundles seem to finish faster, to teachers who spend entire days on Zoom, to concerns about coverage in certain areas. Ugonwa addressed each one, acknowledging frustrations and committing to follow up. “We hear you. From data issues to service gaps, we’re taking notes and acting. Your hustle is important to us, and our job is to enable it,” she reassured the room.
Her approach made it clear that MTN isn’t shying away from customer concerns but leaning into them. In a world where data has become as necessary as food and water, Ugonwa’s session felt like a much-needed reminder that while technology connects us, what really matters is how well it serves the people who rely on it every day. As she closed, the message was simple but powerful: MTN sees you, it hears you, and it is working to make sure your digital life is not just connected but smarter and more empowering.

Paradigm Initiative Equips Prosecutors for the Digital Age of Crime

Paradigm Initiative is organising a capacity-building workshop to empower government prosecutors to prosecute cases committed through or facilitated by digital technologies, specifically examining new Artificial Intelligence (AI) trends in alignment with constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.
The two-day workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, is being held under the theme, “Prosecution in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” It is organised by Paradigm Initiative with support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under the Stemming the Tide of Abuse in Nigeria’s Digital Space (STANDS) Project. Drawing from new trends in the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital systems into public administration and criminal investigations, it aims to find a balance through deep examination and understanding of how these technologies function, the new risks they pose, and the necessary safeguards to ensure that citizens’ fundamental rights remain protected.
This workshop comes at a crucial time, as criminal procedure laws have yet to fully catch up with the realities of the digital age and the evolving ways in which offences are committed. Increasingly, digital platforms are weaponised against victims, violating their privacy and exposing them to harm. With emerging technologies, these threats are becoming more sophisticated, placing mounting pressure on prosecutors to deliver results.
Speaking at the workshop’s opening, Khadijah El-Usman, Paradigm Initiative’s Senior Programmes Officer for Anglophone West Africa and lead on the workshop, highlighted that failure to build this capacity now risks widening the gap between the speed of technological change and the legal system’s ability to respond. This could lead to ill-equipped prosecutors, unintended violations of rights during investigations, and a further loss of public trust in the justice system.
She added, “By investing in targeted training, we can ensure prosecutors are not only keeping pace with emerging threats but are also positioned to advocate for evolving laws in the space.”
In his remarks, the deputy ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy to Nigeria, Robert Sonnemans, praised the way in which Nigeria is embracing the digital age and the opportunities that come with it. “Artificial intelligence is a clear example of both promise and risk, holding immense potential to strengthen investigations and improve access to justice, but also pressing questions on how to ensure fairness and prevent bias or misuse.
The Deputy Director, Department of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Barrister Ali Baba Rijaiu, urged participants to embrace the training, in his words, “the work we do shapes the trust of citizens in the justice system. If we rise to the demand of this digital age, we will not only defeat crime, we will also safeguard freedom and show that justice in Nigeria is not left behind by technology but strengthened by it.”
