Ndukwe Urges ICT Awareness among Civil Servants

 Ernest Ndukwe, executive vice chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, has appealed to various categories of government to ensure that its workforce is ICT literate to be able to fit into the immediate future dynamics of modern economics that is characterized by high level of ICT applications.
Engr. Ndukwe who delivered the 4th Anambra State Public Service Lecture which was hosted by the Anambra State Government, at Awka, said the reality of ICT development, and the fast pace with which Nigeria is catching up, requires that all categories of workers become computer literate and be in the position to access the potentials available on the Internet.
Engr. Ndukwe, said it is for the reason of improving ICT awareness that the regulatory body has introduced several programmes to ensure that the citizenry is computer literate. These include the digital awareness programme (DAP), through which a number of secondary schools and universities across the country and several adjourning communities are equipped with computers and Internet facilities to improve on general awareness.
In addition to this he said the Commission has also embarked on a programme called the advanced digital awareness programme for tertiary (ADAPT), through which thousands of university professors and lectures are trained on computer and ICT awareness to equip them to impart knowledge through the use and application of ICT. Engr. Ndukwe also said that the Universal Service Provision Fund, USPF, has also embarked on similar projects to advance the course of ICT awareness and applications across board.
Engr. Ndukwe whose lecture was titled “Harvesting ICT Revolution for  Knowledge and Socio-Economic Empowerment and Efficient Service Delivery”, told his audience, including Mr. Peter Obi, the Anambra State Governor, the State Commissioners, and a large turnout of civil servants, that the Commission is paying attention to broadband Internet services penetration in the country, through the State Accelerated Broadband Initiative (Sabi) in which all the state capitals and some urban locations will be the immediate beneficiaries in the first phase.
The NCC boss said the country has now witnessed an improved teledensity at more than 50 % and recorded more than 70 Million in active connected lines, an indication of the potentials for ICT penetration in all facets of life including Medicare, education, business, and social interaction among others.
He commended Governor Peter Obi for his programmes aimed at bringing ICT to the door steps of the civil servants and the ordinary citizens of Anambra State.
Mr, Peter Obi, Anambra State Governor, who responded after the lecture, announced the intention of the state government to unveil a broad plan for the computerization of the civil service in the state and listed several programmes currently being implemented with Microsoft and Cisco Corporation in Anambra State.
The Governor commended Ndukwe for coming home to impart knowledge from his very credible experience and international repute and as one of the international personalities produced by the state and given to the world. He told his guests that Ndukwe is one of those shining examples in public service that has made the state proud.
Ngozi Melifonwu, head of Service of Anambra State, whose office coordinates the lecture series, said the choice of the theme for the 4th Public Service Lecture is based on the fact ICT is the bedrock of successful economies as recorded by the Asian Tigers.
She said the choice of Engr. Ndukwe for the lecture was in three folds – he can be regarded as a local icon in the field, because he is from Anambra State, he is an eminent national figure in the world of ICT, as his office the Nigerian Communications Commission, is the Federal establishment that controls the communications sector, and he is internationally renowned for the role he has played and the impact he has made through his office in the ICT transformation of Nigeria.

Dr. Aristotle Onumo, Director, Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, representing the Director General of NITDA, delivers a goodwill message at the 20th International Conference on Technology and Computing (RISE 2026) in Jos, reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to fostering digital innovation, strategic collaboration, and a technology-driven future for Nigeria.

The agency made the call at the 20th Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) International Conference 2026, held in Jos, Plateau State, where stakeholders examined strategies for leveraging emerging technologies to strengthen national development.

Speaking on behalf of the Director-General of NITDA, Mr Kashifu Inuwa, the agency’s Director of Stakeholders Management and Partnerships, Dr Aristotle Onumo, said Nigeria’s digital transformation would depend on sustained investment in innovation, digital skills, research and strategic partnerships.

According to him, collaboration across the public and private sectors is essential to translate emerging technologies into practical solutions capable of improving governance, creating jobs and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness.

Onumo said NITDA remained committed to implementing its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan through initiatives that promote digital literacy, research and development, innovation ecosystems, cyber sovereignty and emerging technologies.

He added that the agency was expanding opportunities for innovators, entrepreneurs and startups through platforms designed to encourage collaboration, investment and technology-driven enterprise.

“We are transforming Digital Nigeria into the nation’s foremost innovation platform where policymakers, investors, startups, researchers and technology companies can collaborate to accelerate economic growth and digital transformation,” he said.

He urged innovators, startup founders and technology professionals to participate actively in the forthcoming Builders Summit by showcasing indigenous solutions capable of addressing Nigeria’s development challenges.

Declaring the conference open, the Governor of Plateau State, Mr Caleb Mutfwang, described digital technology as a critical driver of governance and economic development.

Mutfwang said his administration had adopted digital solutions to improve public service delivery, modernise government operations and enhance internally generated revenue.

He also identified technology as a key enabler for agricultural transformation, increased productivity and improved food security, urging participants to ensure that deliberations at the conference translate into practical outcomes for national development.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Prof. Muhammad Sirajo, said the conference was organised to strengthen collaboration among policymakers, researchers, regulators, technology professionals and industry leaders.

Sirajo said the conference, with the theme “Harnessing Digital Innovation and Emerging Technologies for Inclusive Growth and Economic Renaissance (RISE 2026),” focused on exploring how innovation could accelerate Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

He identified artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, cybersecurity and robotics as among the technologies shaping the future of economies across the world.

According to him, Nigeria’s youthful population and expanding digital ecosystem provide a strong foundation for building a globally competitive economy through sustained investment in digital infrastructure, innovation and skills development.

The conference attracted government officials, regulators, academics, development partners, technology professionals and private-sector stakeholders to deliberate on policies and innovations aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation and inclusive economic renaissance.
