Nokia Partners Etisalat, Etihad for Launch of Lumia 1020

Mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia has moved to delight another market segment with its high end Lumia 1020 Smartphone that boasts of 41-megapixel camera which makes it the ultimate camera phone.

The Lumia 1020 is launched in the Nigerian market in partnership with leading telecommunications service provider, Etisalat Nigeria and the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways.

It is an improved version of the Nokia 808 Smartphone which the company launched in 2012.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 runs on windows 8 operating system. Its 41-megapixel camera sensor combines with Xenon flash, focus assist light and Nokia’s Pro Cam app to make it the most advanced and powerful camera Smartphone.

Speaking to customers on a boat cruise during the launch of the device, Kelechi Amadi-Obi,  renowned Nigerian photographer, highlighted that the Lumia 1020 Smartphone’s dual capture feature allows taking a high resolution 38-megapixel image and also creates a 5-megapixel picture that can be shared on social media.

While sharing 41 pictures he took with the Lumia 1020 tagged “Nigeria in 41 Pictures,” he explained that with the Nokia Pro Camera, users can easily take professional quality images.

The device is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 4.5-inch 1280×768 (334 ppi) AMOLED display, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and a 2000MAh non-removable battery. It also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and support for 4G LTE network.

Chris Brown, general manager, Nokia West Africa, disclosed that the Lumia 1020 is a product of Nokia’s long years of research in imaging technology.

He stressed that based on the level of innovation put into the Smartphone, customers are sure to have great experiences especially camera enthusiasts. “We are creating better Smartphones that allow lifestyle as well as business consumers capture important moments in pictures with our Pureview technology,” he said.

“In addition to having great experiences while using the device, we have partnered with the most innovative telecoms operator, Etisalat Nigeria to provide customers with seamless experiences while using this device so that they can enjoy fantastic bonuses on the network and get airtime of up to N37,000 when they recharge N10,000 on the easyflex 5000 2 for 1 offer. We’ve also partnered with United Arab Emirates flag carrier, Etihad Airways to give customers who purchase the Lumia 1020 various discounts on Etihad Airways published or structural fares” he added.

Speaking at the launch event, Charles Ogunwuyi, director retail sales at Etisalat Nigeria, said, “Etisalat’s partnership with Nokia for the launch of the Lumia 1020 is a result of shared values by both organizations. The Lumia 1020 follows in the footsteps of the Nokia 808 PureView phone, which was the first phone to sport a 41MP sensor. That phone was one of the last Nokia phones to run the Symbian OS, while the Lumia 1020 is a Windows Phone.

Data Protection: NIMC’s Licensees to Face More Scrutiny

Following the reported incident of unauthorized NIN verification by expressverify.com, investigation reveals that a third-party who, among others, was originally authorized to provide verification services to citizens and genuine businesses might have allowed expressverify.com to use its NIN verification credentials to conduct verification. The circumstances surrounding this permission is still under investigation.

 

To remedy this incident, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in line with established remediation protocols, barred all forms of access to its database.

Though necessary, barring all forms of access affected all genuine and crucial verification requests. After a painstaking review, limited access has been granted to few establishments that are providing pivotal public services such as education and security.

Ongoing investigation – by relevant agencies – seeks to establish the medium through which expressverify.com obtained the credentials of bona fide third parties and to determine the liability of persons involved in line with extant laws.

At the moment, data processing by licensees generally are to be scrutinized and only those that are cleared based on credible evidence of regulatory compliance will be permitted to carry out NIN verification going forward.

Furthermore, series of intensive trainings will be conducted in order to ensure that personnel and licensees are abreast of the duty of care and the standard of care mandated by the Nigeria Data Protection Act, NIMC’s Privacy Policy and other relevant regulatory protocols.

In the meantime, NDPC calls on members of the public to see NIN as an essential data for sustainable development. While existing technical and organizational measures are being strengthened to ensure the protection of this data, it is important for citizens to ensure that they are not left unidentified in various frameworks for development. It is equally important to be vigilant when sharing personal information on various online platforms.
