Okonjo-Iweala Tasks FIRS on Technology
Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, minister of Finance, has urged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to deploy more technology-based platforms to boost its operations and revenue collection.
Okonjo-Iweala made the call at a workshop on “Promoting Voluntary Compliance in the Power Sector through Automation,” organised by FIRS in collaboration with Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Abuja.
The minister, who was represented by Mrs Anastesia Nwaobia, permanent secretary in the ministry, also urged FIRS to widen its collaborative efforts to all sectors of the economy for effective compliance with regulations.
She said that the synergy between FIRS and NERC would enable the Service to deploy effective technology-based facility that would enhance tax compliance and overall transactional efficiency in the power sector.
She said that the workshop would facilitate mutual understanding of processes and systems in the emerging power sector in the country and enhance Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue collection within the sector.
According to her, taxes such as VAT provide an instant opportunity to measure progress in the sector and provide instant yield to the government.
“As we may be aware, there is increased focus on growing non-oil tax revenue to enable us improve our overall tax collection and related indices, such as our tax to GDP ratio.
“We are mindful of the fact that investment into the power sector will have an incubation period, within which income taxes may not provide significant yield.
“Focus on VAT, therefore, allows the industry to grow without bearing a huge tax burden, and at the same time enables government to realise revenue from the emergent sector,” she said.
“If the economy could grow to become the largest economy in Africa in the face of power sector challenges, more would be achieved with an efficient and self-sufficient power sector,” the minister added.
Earlier, Alhaji Kabir Mashi, the acting chairman of FIRS, said the service would build on the successes recorded in the privatisation of the power sector to grow the country’s non-oil tax revenue.
He said FIRS decided to partner relevant stakeholders in the power sector to promote greater understanding of the service’s operations.
The chairman said that the workshop was to highlight FIRS’s latest Information Technology collection platforms with respect to the power and energy sector.
He also said that the workshop would create opportunity for FIRS “to understand the process flow, the billing system and the handling of payments, among others, in the power sector”.
He said that the service had, through the Joint Tax Board, had similar engagement with the aviation industry, banking sector, states and local governments.

SEC Gives Reasons for Approving Digital Exchanges
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has clarified that its recent decision to grant approval-in-principle to two cryptocurrency exchanges, Busha Digital Limited and Quidax Technologies Limited, is aimed at encouraging youth participation in Nigeria’s capital market while ensuring adequate investor protection.
Emomotimi Agama, the Director-General of the SEC, highlighted that the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to engaging Nigeria’s youthful population. Agama explained that the approval will create a structure that enhances the participation of young Nigerians in the capital market, particularly in the digital asset space.
“A lot of young Nigerians are fully involved in digital assets, and we cannot shut the door against them,” Agama said. “Rather, the intention of Mr. President is to have them inclusive in the capital market, and that is why we are ensuring that there is regulation and no one is hurt at the end of the day. That’s our responsibility at the SEC, by protecting investors and developing the market.”
Agama emphasized that the commission’s approval is still at an incubation stage, describing it as a “controlled experiment.” He said the SEC will closely monitor the operations of the exchanges to assess the risks they pose to the economy, investors, and themselves as operators.
“It gives us an opportunity to know exactly what they are doing, the risks they pose to our economy, investors, and even to themselves,” he explained. “We are making sure they operate within regulations similar to what is obtainable in other jurisdictions.”
Agama explained SEC’s regulatory approach to digital exchanges is part of a broader strategy to embrace innovation without compromising market stability.
The commission’s Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASP) Regulation framework allows the SEC to fully understand crypto exchanges and virtual financial assets, safeguarding the financial ecosystem from potential risks.
“In our bid not to stifle innovation, we set up a ‘Sound Box’ to understand exactly what these companies are getting into, how it affects customers, the Nigerian public, and the economy,” Agama added. “It is important that they meet the necessary regulatory guidelines before full approval is granted.”
He noted that the SEC is committed to fostering trust and confidence in the capital market, particularly as it relates to integrating digital asset exchanges into the regulated environment.
The introduction of these exchanges, Agama said, opens up new opportunities for younger Nigerians who have shown growing interest in the digital asset space.
“By including these innovations within the broader capital market structure, we are ensuring a balance between fostering innovation and protecting investors,” Agama concluded.
