Mrs Margret Charles, a mother to one of the beneficiaries of the Red Star Express Foundation scholarship award, has expressed appreciation for the Corporate Social Responsibility of the logistics company to its immediate community.

She spoke at the fund presentation ceremony held in honour of recipients of the scholarship award in Lagos recently.

Speaking on behalf of the other parents, Mrs Charles said, “Red Star Express through this scholarship program has not only changed the story of our children but that of the parents as well. The program has helped our children to believe more in their ability; that they can be anything they want to become through hard work and dedication. My son Charles now believes so much in himself and is not afraid of competition.”

The excited mother, whose son, Victor Charles was 2013 one-day chairman as a result of winning the Local Government annual Spelling Bee, attributed her son’s recent academic performance to Red Star Foundation Scholarship.

According to her, “ever since my son won the scholarship, he has continued to win one competition after another, including the spelling bee for Local Government. It is not about the money, which I consider the least of the benefits, it is the confidence and motivation it gives to our children. It has brought the best out of them because they know that they cannot afford to disappoint their sponsors”

Mr Muyiwa Olumekun, executive director of Red Star Express, spent some time listening to the students talk about their dreams and aspirations in life, commending them for their exceptional academic excellence urged them to always remember that they are the future.

He added, “The path to greatness is not easy, sometimes it’s rough. You must remain determined and passionate about your dreams. Passion and hard work will keep you on the track. That is why world champions don’t give-up on winning even when they have made so much money; they keep winning because they have passion for what they do.”

Olumekun also restated the commitment of Red Star Express to remain true to its promises.

“As a company, we believe in giving back to our host community and the larger society. The Red Star Foundation is one the platforms through which we express our corporate social responsibility and we are excited that our little effort is having positive impact on the lives of young people.”

The company also re-introduced the Red Star Scholarship mentor-mentee relationship by appointing some of its key managers to mentor each of the awardees.

“We believe that as young people, these students need a lot of guidance outside their teachers and parents. We are happy that some of our key managers have graciously volunteered to build mentorship relationships with these young people to help nurture them in every way possible as they make their ways to greatness.”

One of the awardees, Miss Joy James of Mafoluku Grammar School, a science student who wants to become a Gynaecologist, spoke on behalf of the students. She said, “Thank you Red Star Express for being so supportive of our dreams and ambitions. Your contribution has really gone a long way to ease the burden on our parents and we are also motivated to give our very best.”

The Red Star Express established the Foundation in 2004 with the objectives of expressing its social responsibility to the host communities; leveraging on its corporate goodwill, demonstrating its core value for the benefit of the society and encouraging excellence, diligence and integrity among secondary school students. Red Star Express appropriates 0.5 per cent of its profit after tax towards the running of the “Red Star Foundation annually”.

Kaspersky Warns of Data Stealers Hunting for User Credentials

Published

As the malware development market continues to flourish with new stealers such as Lumma, for the last three years Redline still remains the dominant data-stealing malware used by cybercriminals.

More than half of every device (55%) targeted by password-stealer attacks in 2023 has been infected with the Redline malware, Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence finds.

Infostealers infiltrate devices to illicitly obtain sensitive credentials such as logins and passwords, which are then peddled on the shadow market, posing significant cybersecurity threats to personal and corporate systems.

According to information gleaned from log-files traded or distributed freely on the dark web, Redline was used in 51% of infostealer infections from 2020 to 2023. Other notable malware families included Vidar (17%) and Raccoon (nearly 12%).

In total, around 100 distinct infostealer types were identified by Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence between 2020 and 2023 using metadata from log-files.

The underground market for data-stealing malware development is expanding, evident from the rising popularity of new stealers.

Between 2021 and 2023, the portion of infections caused by new stealers grew from 4% to 28%. Specifically, in 2023, the new “Lumma” stealer alone was responsible for more than 6% of all infections.

“Lumma emerged in 2022 and gained popularity in 2023, through a Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) distribution model.

This means any criminal, even those without advanced technical skills, can purchase a subscription for a pre-made malicious solution and use this stealer to carry out cyberattacks.

“Lumma is primarily designed for stealing credentials and other information from cryptocurrency wallets, commonly spread through email, YouTube, and Discord spam campaigns,” says Sergey Shcherbel, expert at Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence.

To guard against data-stealing malware, individuals are advised to use a comprehensive security solution for any device. This will help prevent infections and alert them to dangers, such as suspicious sites or phishing emails that can be an initial vector for infection. Companies can help their users, employees and partners protect themselves from the threat by proactively monitoring leaks and prompting users to change leaked passwords immediately.

Sharing your phone number on chatting platforms can expose you to unwanted spam, potential security breaches, and even compromise your identity.

Simple Azenabor, CEO, SoftTalk Messenger, a Nigerian developer based in Japan, said: “Anyone in an individual or a group chat can see your phone number. But don’t worry, you can use SoftTalk Messenger that doesn’t require a phone number.

“It gives you the best of both worlds, the freedom to communicate with anyone and everyone, and the security of keeping your phone number private”.

SoftTalk Messenger allows you to connect effortlessly with your friends, school mates, and family by using your @username, eliminating the need to share your phone numbers. This feature provides privacy for your phone number, particularly in group chats.

To add friends you simply search by their Unique SoftTalk @USERNAMES or Names to start a conversation and make encrypted HD audio and video calls.

It is possible for a user to turn off and on his profile from  the SoftTalk directory if he prefers not to be discovered in a public search for a complete world of his own. Helping you to communicate with friends safely and privately

SoftTalk Messenger is a Nigeria’s Messaging app for Africans & the world. It enables users to buy and sell products and services in a marketplace, post stories, chat, make audio / video calls as well as pay utilities bills & buy low cost data & prepaid mobile airtime in Nigeria with plans to expand to other African countries in the near future. Users can make extra income by reselling Data and airtime to their friends right from within the app.

Messages are encrypted and transferred over a secure channel and use standard encryption algorithms: RSA-2048, RC4+ making sure that only the receiver of the message is able to read it. SoftTalk Messenger accommodates a total of 500,000 participants in a single group, and members can share media and large files.

According to Simple Azenabor, there is no doubt that Nigerians and indeed Africans are hungry for a new technology and need something different that can be called our “own” . It is my wish to see Nigerians use and encourage an indigenous solution built by one of us to grow our own.

The android version of the app was first introduced to Nigerians in late 2018 in the presence of the delegates from the NCC officials and the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Raufu Mohammed represented by a Director General in the ministry. SoftTalk Messenger has been bootstrapping and exploring various technologies in order to strengthen its backend infrastructure to build a secure and scalable system.

Today, SoftTalk Messenger  is available on both android, web and the Apple iOS platforms with support of about 16 languages including French and can be downloaded on google and apple stores.
