Telecom Promos: Real or Imaginary?
Telecommunication companies as part of their marketing strategies roll out promos at different times to maximize the sales of their products and to compensate their subscribers for their patronage.
Promos enable two-way dialogue between brands and audiences.
Since the advent of the telecommunications revolution, telecommunications companies have been at their competitive edge dishing out mouth watering bumper offers to their subscribers.
Such offers range from make money while you receive calls, get 10 percent free airtime on every recharge you make, to win cars and lots of other prizes.
In the real sense, sales promos help to build sales, reverse declining sales, or to convert from niche to mainstream.
The explosion in promos by telecom companies has raised concerns over their authenticity.
Ikechi Ogwuegbu, a business man said that some “promos are means of extortion. In a promo where millions of people are conditioned to buy recharge cards, the chances of people being picked are like a cattle passing through the eye of a needle. After the prizes have been presented, I have never seen a winner drive in the cars they claim to have won. The only one I can say is real is who wants to be a millionaire”
Pastor Mrs. Florence N. Toby, Mrs. Zainab Salami and Mr. Emeka Igenaka, all had early Christmas gifts last year as they won brand new Kia Rio cars in the Visafone Fantastic Bonanza 12 cars in 12 weeks promo.
The winners were picked in a raffle draw held in public view.
Also Edet Udo, a building materials trader, won a brand new BMW 3 Series in the Glo Win & Rule promo held in Calabar last December.
Elsewhere, Zain is offering instant N200 bonus airtime on every N2000 recharge using its physical cards; N100 bonus on every N1000 recharge and N50 and N20 bonus airtime on every N500 and N200 recharge respectively using recharge cards.
Toyin Owolabi, a medical doctor stated that “until I see with my eyes someone who has won, then and then would I believe it is real. I know of someone who buys credit worth N2,000 everyday, kept sending text messages to the operator’s required numbers on a daily basis and has not won a dime. I don’t bother myself playing it because I know it is fake. I have got text messages in time past informing me that I have won in one of the promotions but at the end of the day, it was all a lie”.
Chidi Okeke, a civil servant said that “they disturb me a lot with text messages asking me to participate in their promos. I see the promos as propagandas and I will not deceive myself by participating in one. It is nothing but an avenue of making money for themselves”.
Bisi Adebowale, a student added that “the promos are real because a friend of mine won a Honda VTEC in a telecom promo sometime ago.”
Mr. Emma Otokhine, Public Relations Manager Zain, said that “we don’t organize promotions without bringing it to the notice of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Council.
This body is saddled with the responsibility of protecting consumers’ rights and is empowered by law to protect consumer’s interest, preventing them from being exploited.
As part of giving credibility to the promos we conduct, journalists from the print and broadcast media are invited to cover the draw events in order for the whole world to see that nothing is done in secrecy.
Speaking of terms and conditions in promos, these always apply depending on the nature of the promo in question. The terms and conditions states what must be done to become a prospective winner.”
Whatever the argument, it is hoped that subscribers sees promos as incentives designed to stimulate the purchase or sale of a product, usually in the short term.
Telecom operators should concentrate efforts at improving the quality of their offering because as the saying goes, “a good market advertises itself”.

Samsung Cuts Hundreds of U.S. Jobs as Consumer Electronics Business Moves to Texas

Samsung Electronics has laid off hundreds of employees in its United States consumer electronics business as part of a headquarters relocation from New Jersey to Texas, amid mounting pressure on its mobile and home appliance divisions.

The South Korean technology giant said Samsung Electronics America (SEA) would relocate its headquarters to Texas, a move affecting 739 positions in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
The company said most affected employees had been offered relocation packages, while others were laid off.
In Plano, Texas, about 100 employees, including workers in Samsung’s mobile division, were also dismissed, according to a source familiar with the development.
Samsung said the relocation could lead to workforce changes involving employees unable to relocate and the restructuring of certain functions to align with business priorities.
Documents cited by Reuters indicated that affected employees were informed on June 30 of an enterprise-wide workforce reduction that would have a significant impact on staff.
Several employees also disclosed their departures through posts on LinkedIn, including senior sales and marketing executives based in Texas and New Jersey.
The layoffs come despite Samsung’s semiconductor division recording strong growth driven by rising global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
The company recently projected a 19-fold increase in second-quarter profit, supported by booming AI-related chip sales, and announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in expanding chip manufacturing.
However, Samsung’s consumer electronics business continues to struggle with higher semiconductor costs and increasing competition.
Its mobile division is expected to record its first-ever operating loss as it faces stiff competition from Apple, while Chinese brands, including TCL and Hisense, continue to gain market share in the television and home appliance segments.
Industry observers say the contrasting performance highlights Samsung’s growing reliance on its semiconductor business as consumer electronics revenues weaken.
Samsung denied reports of a broader global restructuring, insisting there was no company-wide overhaul of its consumer products division.
According to the company, relocating its U.S. headquarters is intended to improve collaboration and strengthen operations within Texas’ expanding technology and AI ecosystem.
Texas has increasingly attracted major technology companies due to its lower taxes and business-friendly environment, with firms such as Tesla and Oracle also relocating significant operations to the state.
Samsung already operates semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Texas, alongside its mobile operations hub in Plano.
As of the end of 2025, Samsung Electronics employed about 11,770 workers across the United States, including staff in its semiconductor business.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDS America, the company’s IT services affiliate, has also notified authorities that 179 positions could be affected by the relocation of its North American headquarters, although Samsung said the move was unrelated to layoffs or corporate restructuring.

NITRA
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will lead other delegates to discuss and take far-reaching decisions at the event, which has its theme as “Bridging Nigeria’s Digital Divide With Scientific Innovation”.
Other companies that have indicated interest in partnering with NITRA include mobile communications company, Tecno; Africa’s premier end-to-end AI solutions company, Hyperspace; and telecommunications data infrastructure company, Digital Realty.
Speaking on the proposed event, the Chairman, Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA), Chike Onwuegbuchi noted that the event will seek to create a platform for government and private organisations to deliberate on policies around scientific innovations in Nigeria, challenges, place of indigenous and foreign collaboration, roles of each stakeholder, and grassroots development in that regard, among others.
According to him: “The Federal government, with series of programmes and partnerships, has established the urgent need to create an ecosystem that thrives on scientific innovation, breeding institutions and individuals with a target of placing the country at the fore-front of Next-Gen development.
It is a known fact that digital and scientific innovations are crucial, not only to the survivability of a nation, but also to the sustainability of its growth and development, with significant effect on economic strength, global image, defense and security, government capabilities to function, and public health and safety, communication and digital footprint, among others.
The federal government is actively driving scientific innovation to foster economic diversification and build a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Efforts are heavily focused on commercializing research, establishing massive research funds, and funding strategic infrastructure, particularly in technology, biotechnology, and healthcare. Core government initiatives and policies include the newly instituted National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF), which aims to mobilize about $500 million annually to support research and the commercialization of scientific outputs; and the Nigeria Genomic City, a multi-ministerial initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria into a leading hub for genomics, precision medicine, and biotechnology. It is designed to protect indigenous data, stimulate artificial intelligence in health, and develop a highly skilled scientific workforce.
According to the General Secretary of NITRA, Mr. Chidiebere Nwankwo, the forum will also be a vehicle to propagating the views of decision makers to the public, thereby furthering the cause of public awareness and information dissemination on the topic.
