As Nigeria welcomes back the first set of evacuees fleeing Sudan, MTN Nigeria is offering free airtime and data to the returnees to support their resettlement in Nigeria.

The North African country has been embroiled in a bloody conflict since April 15 and after waves of assurances by the Federal Government on evacuating Nigerians stranded in the country, over 300 of them landed at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja in the early hours of Thursday morning. More evacuees are expected to return through the course of the week.

Receiving the evacuees at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday morning, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Farouq, disclosed that various organisations were supporting resettlement efforts for the returnees.

“Today, we are very happy to receive them. They have gone through a very traumatic period but we give thanks to Almighty Allah that all of them are back safely. No life was lost which is the most important thing. All the efforts put in place were not in vain.

“I thank every member of the Committee that has put all efforts to ensure that these people are brought back safely and with dignity. We thank the transport companies for their support.

“There is N100,000 that would transport them back to their families which is supported by the Dangote Foundation by giving them the transportation fare as well as the dignity kits and 25,000 recharge cards from MTN and 1.5 GB data courtesy of MTN.

“All efforts have been put in place and everyone has contributed to ensuring that at least these Nigerians have some comfort when they return home.”

Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court Abuja has discharged and acquitted Ishaq Kawu Modibbo, former director-general, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and Pinnacle Communications Limited.

Ishaq Kawu Modibbo, former director-general, NBC

They were being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences (ICPC) of charges bordering on the ₦2.5 billion released to Pinnacle Communications under the Federal Government Digital Switch Over (DSO) project.

Delivering judgement on Thursday, Justice Ogunbanjo held that the ICPC was not able to prove the allegations against the defendants.

The judge further discharged the defendants on the grounds that the statements and evidence of the witnesses, could not pin any allegation on the defendants.

She further held that some of the witnesses contradicted themselves, and none of their statements was able to link the defendants to the charge.

According to the judge, while some of the witnesses in their oral evidence, said Lai Mohammed, former Minister of Information, was misled in approving the payment of ₦2.5 billion to Pinnacle Communications Ltd, they failed to render any documentary evidence.

The trial of the former director-general of the NBC lasted for six years.

The Federal Government has urged all radio stations in Nigeria to use their platforms to create awareness about climate change and its impact on the country.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in a statement he personally signed on Thursday in celebration of World Radio Day.

“Through informative and educational programs, Radio, like other critical media, can equip communities with the knowledge and tools to adapt to the changing climate and mitigate its effects,” he said.

He challenged radio stations to collaborate with other organisations and experts in the field of climate change to provide accurate and reliable information to listeners through interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers to enhance understanding of the issue and work towards finding sustainable solutions in line with President Bola Ahamed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister said, “The environment community should use this opportunity to reflect on their actions and how they contribute to climate change by adhering to simple changes in their daily habits, such as reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable agriculture, in order to make a significant impact in the long run.

“As Nigeria joins the world to celebrate the role of radio in fighting climate change, it is also important for citizens to remember that effects of climate change issues are beyond borders and are felt globally.”

The minister, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to join hands with other nations to find solutions and create a better future for the generations to come.

While congratulating UNESCO on this initiative, Idris wants the power of radio to be fully harnessed to make a difference and protect the planet for future generations.
