Google at “Get Fit With Google” Showcases Android Wear Innovations

Google Nigeria displayed its technological prowess in apps development particularly in making life easier.
Hosting “Get Fit With Google” sessions at the Bodyline Fitness Centre in Ikoyi, the Google team showed participants how they could use both their phones and wearable tech to improve their fitness.
Speaking to Nigeria CommunicationsWeek, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google West Africa’s communications and PR manager, said the sessions were organised to create awareness on the need for Nigerians to leverage innovative applications to keep to their desires for fitness.
He reviewed Google search trends which indicate that globally, online searches for health/ fitness/gyms peak in December January, while in Nigeria, they follow a quarterly pattern, with Nigerians searching for gyms more than health, wellness or fitness.
According to Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, “’Through Google search trends, it was revealed that gym and fitness searches peaked around the new year, but the steam goes down as the year matures because people tend to get weighed down by the diary life issues: payment of house rents, school fees and others. But we have apps that will help them remain focused and leverage the advantages of the gym and fit exercise.
“The uniqueness of these apps is that they keep the records for weeks or a month. So, one can track the progress or decline. It is a sort of motivation when you see how much you have achieved over a time and will spur you to do more”.
“Generally speaking, technology should be a part of everyday life. Google organised ‘Get Fit with Google’ to demonstrate how mobile devices can be incorporated in Fitness regimens to improve the efficacy of workout sessions.
Meanwhile, participants at the “Get Fit With Google” were treated to an aerobics session, cycling exercises and a fun Zumba session.
Google Fit App
Google had announced Google Fit App in 2014, available in it Google Play and brings a fairly basic activity tracker to users’ Android phone.
Google Fit tracks walking, running, and cycling activity, either on your phone or from an Android Wear device.
With a compatible app on your smartphone, users’ can set goals based on either duration or steps and see their progress throughout the day; receive performance-based recommendations for activity goals and acomprehensive view of your fitness – Connect third party devices and apps to Fit and we’ll show you all of your fitness data in one place.
At a group session where the mobile devices were tested, Abdulsalam Abdullateef, analytical lead, Google Nigeria demonstrated how a variety of Android apps.
He also demoed how Android wearable devices can be used during exercise or just to make daily activity much easier, e.g checking the weather news, asking for directions, surfing the internet, taking dictation( Kindly see your copy of OK Google, Let’s Recap, for a description of the devices and apps e.g Tabata and Fit App, which works with an accelerometer on Android smart watches to measure distance walked, calories burned, heart rate, etc during workouts )
Abdullateef defined Google Fit App as simply “a health-tracking platform developed by Google to aid smartphone users make best use of the platform in keeping track of their fitness activities.
“By synchronising the SmartBand Talk with Google Fit, one can easily integrate data about his/her fitness activities from various sources to help you better understand progress you have made, Google said during the launch of the app.

SmartBand Talk is optimised for use with the Lifelog application so that both interfaces display the same data about one’s fitness activities.
However, due to different programming and different synchronisation intervals, the data displayed in the Google Fit application may differ from the data shown on your SmartBand Talk and in the Lifelog application.
When you activate Google Fit on your SmartBand Talk, the data logged by your SmartBand Talk can be viewed in the Google Fit application, which can be downloaded from Google Play.
Therefore, it is recommended to use the application that best suits your needs.

Study Reveals 88.5% of Phishing Attacks Focus on Stealing Account Credentials

Kaspersky analysed phishing and scam campaigns observed from January through September 2025 and found that 88.5% of attacks globally sought credentials for various online accounts.

Another 9.5% targeted personal data such as names, addresses, and dates of birth, while 2% focused on bank card details.
According to data from Kaspersky, over 38 million phishing links were clicked in Africa in the previous year (from November 2024 to October 2025) – all of which were detected and blocked by Kaspersky solutions.
Not everyone uses protective solutions on their devices however, and phishing remains one of the most prevalent cyber threats, with attackers luring users to fake websites where they unwittingly surrender their login credentials, personal information, or bank card details.
Kaspersky research shows that most phishing pages transmit stolen information via email, Telegram bots, or attacker-controlled panels, before it enters underground resale channels.
Data stolen through phishing is rarely used only once: credentials from multiple campaigns are consolidated into data dumps and sold on dark web markets, in some cases for as little as $50. Buyers sort and verify the data to check whether accounts remain active and reusable across different services.
According to Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence, average 2025 prices ranged from $0.90 for global Internet portals to $105 for crypto platforms and $350 for online banking access. Personal documents such as passports or ID cards sold for about $15 on average, with pricing influenced by account age, balance, linked payment methods, and security settings.
As datasets are enriched and combined, attackers can build detailed digital profiles that may later support targeted attacks on executives, finance staff, IT-administrators or individuals with valuable assets or personal documents.
“Our analysis shows that credentials account for nearly 90% of phishing attempts. Once collected, logins, passwords, phone numbers, and personal details are aggregated, checked, and resold, sometimes years after the initial theft.
Combined with new information, even old credentials can enable account takeovers and targeted attacks against both individuals and organisations.
By leveraging open-source intelligence and old breach data, attackers can craft highly personalised scams, turning one-time victims into long-term targets for identity theft, blackmail, or financial fraud,” said Olga Altukhova, senior web content analyst at Kaspersky.

Study Reveals Majority of IT Professionals Show Openness to Cyber Immunity

The cybersecurity landscape is evolving rapidly, with organisations seeking more robust ways to protect their digital assets. Another 48% connected it to highly skilled cybersecurity teams, indicating that while awareness is high, a unified understanding is still developing.
The growing demand for proactive security
One of the most striking findings is the optimism surrounding inherently secure systems. Over half of respondents in the META region (63%) believe it is already possible or definitely achievable to design systems capable of withstanding cyberattacks without relying on additional security solutions.
Another 32% think it might be possible, reflecting openness to this idea despite some uncertainty. This shift in mindset aligns with a broader industry trend: traditional reactive security measures are no longer sufficient.
With AI-powered threats and increasingly sophisticated attacks, organisations need solutions that do more than just detect breaches—they must prevent them by design.
Integrating Cyber Immunity into security strategies
The study emphasises that resilience, expertise, and flexibility will define the next generation of cybersecurity. While Secure by Design provides the methodology, Cyber Immunity represents the ultimate goal—systems so robust that they minimise reliance on external defences.
“For companies looking ahead, Cyber Immunity offers more than just protection — it brings clear business benefits. When systems are built to be secure from the ground up, there’s less need for constant updates, patches, and extra security tools. That means fewer costs, less strain on IT teams, and stronger, more reliable protection over time,” said Dmitry Lukiyan, Head of KasperskyOS Business Unit.
