Experts Seek Effective Spectrum Management for 5G Deployment
Experts in the telecommunications sector have called for effective understanding of spectrum management is very key to the smooth deployment of fifth generation (5G) mobile technology.
The telecom experts who gathered at a five-day virtual masterclass organised by Tetconsult, a consulting firm, brainstormed on the challenges and opportunities of 5G in the country and Africa at large.
Shola Taylor, chief executive officer of Tetconsult and immediate past secretary-general of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO), said effective spectrum management is the panacea to the smooth running of today’s ICT landscape the world over.
Taylor said, “Spectrum is the oxygen of the ICT world today and efficiency is the key for spectrum managers thus they need to be fully skilled to allocate the scarce resource efficiently.”
Participants rated the master class excellent citing how it helps with their day-to- day assignments.
According to Rodine Renner, deputy director, ICT at PURA, Gambia, the training is the spectrum manager’s one stop shop training program.
Mohammad Ayoub, another participant, Spectrum manager at TRB, Lebanon, submitted that the topics addressed by the program are fundamental to frequency management and are presented in a detailed, smooth and enjoyable manner.
For Kaltumi Giwa, an engineer at the National Broadcasting Commission, (NBC) Nigeria, “the training stairs up in the regulator/ spectrum manager the desire to efficiently manage RF spectrum, awakening the need to take the dynamic technological landscape into consideration.”
Taylor, who was the lead facilitator, said it has become pertinent to have such a knowledge impact on the sector at a time like this when 5G spectrum licensing is around the corner, adding that, “auctions have increasingly become the most transparent method of awarding spectrum licences with benefits to consumers, governments, regulators and society at large.”
Industry speakers at the event include MTN Group South Africa, European Broadcasting Union, Inmarsat UK, International Amateur Radio Union and Liviasoft Technologies, USA. Technocrats who are the custodians of spectrum management across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific and USA participated.
The U.S. government has recovered $225 million in what is now the largest seizure of funds linked to a cryptocurrency investment scam.
In a statement released Wednesday, June 18, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said the recovery followed an extensive investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, using blockchain analysis and other forensic tools. The statement did not confirm whether any arrests had been made.
According to the authorities, the stolen funds originated from fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes that tricked victims into believing they were making legitimate investments. More than 400 individuals around the world, including dozens in the United States, were reportedly affected.
The operation involved a sophisticated money laundering network that carried out hundreds of thousands of blockchain transactions to obscure the source and ownership of the stolen assets.
“These scams prey on trust, often resulting in extreme financial hardship for the victims,” said Shawn Bradstreet, Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Secret Service office in San Francisco.
Bradstreet added that U.S. officials hope the recovered funds can eventually be returned to the rightful victims.
Cryptocurrency investment fraud accounted for over $5.8 billion in reported losses in 2024 alone, according to the statement.

With innovation hubs sprouting across cities like Enugu, Lagos, Kigali, Jo’Burg, and Nairobi, and a growing community of developers, engineers, and entrepreneurs determined to solve Africa’s unique challenges, the movement is already taking shape.
Ani emphasized that Africa’s future lies not in flashy apps or international admiration but in persistent, intentional solutions that uplift communities—solutions that digitize public services, bridge rural-urban divides, empower women and youth, and build resilience in food and climate systems.
“We have the talent,” he said. “Now it’s time to harness it—to stop building for likes and start building for lasting impact.”
With support from leaders like Ani and rising momentum in Africa’s tech corridors, it seems that a new chapter is being written—one line of code at a time.
Mafab Communications, operating under the brand Mcom, has officially activated its mobile service infrastructure and commenced offering telecommunications services — including voice, data, and SMS — with new number range, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek can report.

Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has also confirmed the entry of Mcom which listed 0724 as officially assigned to Mafab.
An insider at Mafab told this reporter that “ We are Nigeria’s first 5G standalone network provider, revolutionizing the telecommunications landscape. We are driven by a vision to foster a world where possibilities know no bounds with the power of technology”
Recall that the original 5G licence was awarded to Mafab in 2021, with an expectation that rollout would have fully commence by August 2022.
MTN Nigeria, the other winner of the license adhered to this timeline and deployed its 5G across major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.
Mafab on the other hand, requested and was granted an extension of time, which it have finally taken advantage of by the recent launch.
Mafab Communications is owned by Dr. Musbahu Bashir, who is also the founder and chairman of the company.
He is the individual behind the Mcom 5G brand and has been instrumental in launching the company’s 5G services.
