FAAN to Replace Physical ID Check with V-Pass Biometric Verification
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to introduce a biometric identity verification system, known as V-Pass, to speed up passenger processing and enhance security at domestic airports nationwide.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening aviation security, reducing passenger processing time and eliminating dependence on physical identity documents.
A statement issued yesterday by Henry Agbebire, director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, said the new facial recognition platform, developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, would enable passengers to verify their identities through biometric authentication, allowing them seamless access through airport security checkpoints and boarding gates.
According to him, the initiative formed the focus of a strategic meeting between FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited, where both organisations reviewed deployment plans, security safeguards and measures to improve passenger experience.
The statement hinted that the authority centred on ensuring the successful rollout of the digital platform while maintaining high security standards.
The statement quoted, Adebola Agunbiade, director of Commercial and Business Development, FAAN, as describing the V-Pass as another milestone in the authority’s ongoing digital transformation programme.
According to her, the platform indicated FAAN’s commitment to deploying innovative technology that enhances passenger facilitation while reinforcing aviation security across domestic airports.
She assured that the system would provide every traveller with a secure digital identity through a one-time enrolment process.
Under the arrangement, Nigerian passengers would register using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture, while foreign travellers would enroll with their passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) supported by biometric authentication, the statement added.
FAAN said the system would verify passenger identities before they gain access to restricted airport areas and once again before boarding their flights.
The agency noted that the dual-verification process was designed to prevent identity fraud, impersonation and unauthorised access to airport facilities, while giving security agencies greater confidence in passenger authentication.
Passengers would be able to complete the verification process either through self-service kiosks or with assistance from trained FAAN personnel.
The deployment would also include electronic gates to automate access into controlled areas, reduce queues and improve passenger movement across airport terminals.
According to the developers, first-time registration is expected to take about one minute, while subsequent biometric verification would take less than 30 seconds.
Apart from passenger processing, the V-Pass platform would also provide airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics.
FAAN assured travellers that data protection remained a critical component of the project, stressing that the platform fully complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
Federal high court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of N941,994,079.86 linked to suspected ghost workers uncovered in the integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS) to the federal government.
IPPIS is a centralised payroll system the federal government introduced to manage the salaries of federal public sector employees.
Binta Nyako, presiding judge, gave the order following an application filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
“That an Order is hereby made for the Final Forfeiture to the Federal Republic of Nigeria the Sum of N941,994,079.86 seized during investigation into the IPPIS Payroll scam in the year 2024,” Nyako ruled.
Okor Odey, ICPC spokesperson, announced the forfeiture in a statement issued at the weekend.
The ICPC spokesperson said investigations by the commission uncovered “large-scale payroll fraud involving hundreds of non-existent public servants, with a total sum of N941,994,079.86 traced to accounts linked to the scheme”.
Odey said a review of the IPPIS conducted in 2023 revealed the “existence of numerous “ghost workers” embedded within the payrolls of several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)”.
According to him, following the findings, President Bola Tinubu approved a “comprehensive audit” of the IPPIS.
He added that a joint investigation between the ICPC and the office of the accountant-general of the federation in April 2025 led to the discovery of 587 suspected ghost workers on the IPPIS platform.
“Investigations revealed that fictitious IPPIS identities had been created for non-existent personnel across multiple MDAs, with salaries paid over extended periods into accounts belonging to individuals and companies,” Odey said.
“In many cases, the account names did not correspond with those of the purported employees, while some accounts received multiple salary payments simultaneously.”
The ICPC spokesperson said the agency placed post no debit (PND) restrictions on all identified accounts to freeze the funds suspected to be proceeds of fraud.
He said the affected MDAs include the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), federal ministries of defence, education, agriculture and rural development, works, water resources, and interior.
Others are National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Benin, University of Calabar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Maiduguri, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the office of the accountant-general of the federation.
The ICPC spokesperson said 120 civil servants were cleared after their identities and employment status were confirmed following a verification exercise in 2025.
He added that 467 bank accounts remain linked to unverified individuals with holders yet to be identified.
He noted that the N941.9 million currently frozen in the 467 bank accounts has been forfeited to the federal government.
He disclosed that the agency published the names of the 910 individuals suspected to have benefited from the purported fraud in two national dailies on March 18, 2026.

“The programme reflects NIMASA’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the vision of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in unlocking the immense potential of the blue economy by empowering young innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology-driven enterprises. We at NIMASA want to provide a platform for investors to identify young talents and invest in them”.
Mobereola, who commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola for codifying the Marine and Blue Economy Policy as a clear roadmap for the sector’s development, urged young Nigerians to embrace the programme which has the potential to transform raw talents into big investments in the maritime sector.
Applications are open to startups and innovators developing solutions across several strategic sectors, including marine waste management and the blue circular economy; aquaculture and sustainable fisheries; maritime technology and logistics innovation; ocean energy including wave, tidal, and offshore renewable energy; marine tourism and coastal recreation; marine biotechnology such as, ocean data and analytics; green shipping, including vessel decarbonization; smart port solutions; autonomous marine vehicles; biofouling prevention technologies; and coastal resilience through nature-based coastal defencesolutions.
The first phase of the programme is expected to attract a minimum of 150 high-quality applications from within and outside the country provided they are Nigerian citizens.
Stakeholders have called for increased support to encourage girls to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), saying greater participation is critical to bridging the gender gap in the digital economy.

The call was made at the 2026 International Girls in ICT Day organised by eBusiness Life Communication Limited in Lagos, with the theme: “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future.”
The event brought together students, educators, technology experts and industry stakeholders to inspire young girls to embrace careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.
Speaking at the event, the Convener and Chief Executive Officer of eBusiness Life Communication Limited, Mrs Ufuoma Emuophedaro, said empowering girls with digital skills was essential for innovation, economic growth and inclusive national development.
She stressed the need to eliminate barriers limiting female participation in technology and called for equal access to scholarships, mentorship, leadership opportunities and career development programmes.
“Today, we challenge the existing narrative. We stand together to break barriers, challenge stereotypes and create opportunities for every girl to pursue a career in technology,” she said.
Emuophedaro cited International Telecommunication Union (ITU) projections indicating that the global ICT industry could face a shortage of more than two million skilled professionals over the next five years.
According to her, girls equipped with skills in coding, application development and computer science would enjoy significant career opportunities across multiple sectors.
She noted that more than 417,000 girls and young women had participated in over 11,500 International Girls in ICT Day activities across 175 countries.
She described this year’s event as a movement aimed at encouraging girls to become innovators, software developers, entrepreneurs, researchers and technology leaders rather than merely consumers of digital technologies.
A student panel session highlighted how young girls are already leveraging AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta AI for learning, creativity and entrepreneurship.
The students, however, cautioned against excessive dependence on AI and identified gender stereotypes, limited access to digital resources, inadequate funding and societal expectations as major barriers to girls’ participation in technology.
They advocated increased mentorship, parental support, digital literacy programmes and the responsible integration of AI into school curricula.
The event also featured a Women in ICT Partners’ Panel, where participants encouraged girls to explore opportunities in cybersecurity, data science, data analytics, networking and user interface and user experience (UI/UX) design.
The panelists described artificial intelligence as an enabler capable of creating new opportunities rather than replacing human potential.
One of the highlights of the programme was an exhibition of technology-driven projects developed by students.
The innovations included an emergency distress application, a flood detection system with GSM integration, AI-powered study cards, a smart irrigation system, Waste Intelligence Nexus and the EDUVERSE AI educational platform.
The projects demonstrated how young girls are applying technology to solve real-life challenges in education, agriculture, environmental sustainability, disaster management and public safety.
The event also featured AI practical and quiz competitions.
Reagan Memorial College, Yaba, emerged winner of the quiz competition, while Baptist Girls Academy, Lagos, and Triple Crown Academy, Ketu, finished second and third respectively.
Faith Academy, Ota, won the AI practical competition, with Reagan Memorial College and Peaklane International College, Akute, Ogun State, taking second and third positions respectively.
