Local IT developers have embraced SkillsMix outsourcing portal for projection execution.

At a meeting with Samuel Adesoga , managing director/CEO of Thought Studio,, at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB) in Lagos on Tuesday, the developers expressed their support for the platform.

CcHub is Nigeria’s first open living lab and pre-incubation space designed as a multi-functional, multi-purpose space where work to catalyze creative social tech ventures take place.

The Hub is a place for technologists, social entrepreneurs, government, tech companies, impact investors and hackers in and around Lagos to co-create new solutions to the many social problems in Nigeria.

Adesoga explained that local project owners who seek skillful professionals to execute and fulfill their projects need not worry any more as SkillsMix is open to all freelance web designers, web developers, marketers and writers who require avenue to express their prowess.

At the interactive forum, he said that the outsourcing and crowd-sourcing site was designed specifically for project owners seeking how to effectively execute their projects, which could be a web design or similar projects on time and on budget.

“The project owners can outsource the projects to freelancers in order to save costs”, he said SkillsMix portal would source the right freelance designers, developers, writers etc across the nation on behalf of the project owners.

He therefore urged local IT developers who are mindful of earning additional incomes to register on the site, as registration on the SkillsMix site is free.

Some categories of job listed on the site include logo design, graphic design, basic web design, e-commerce, blogs, content management systems, mobile apps, social networks, database, search engine optimization, web apps and software, writing and marketing.

While describing how SkillsMix works, Adesoga explained that project owners are required to post their projects and supporting documents or project specification on the website www.skillsmix.com.

This enables registered freelancers and skilled workers to locate these projects and join the project’s discussion online. SkillsMix’s objective is to deepen the growing information communications technology industry in Nigeria.

According to him, www.skillsmix.com is designed such that each project has its own discussion forum where freelancers would raise questions concerning the project under scrutiny.

The freelancers would convince the project owner about their skills and experiences as well as qualifications to execute the projects. Each skilled worker/freelancer has a profile page that exhibits the communication skills, work ethic, technical skills, reviews from past projects etc.

“Freelancers will start sending their bid proposals which would include proposed cost, estimated completion time and any other supporting information to help project owners make informed decision of granting the project to a skilled worker,” he explained.

Project owners would filter through the information and select the best freelancer for the job according to needs. Project owners would make selection based on the quality of the information presented on the profile page and the quality of the bid submitted.

Adesoga further explained that at this point, a project owner would setup milestones and a payment schedule for the project’s progress once a project has been awarded to a freelancer. Once both parties agreed on the timelines and expectations, the project would begin.

SkillsMix enables the project owners to manage a project’s progress with great tools for the successful completion of the project.

“Project owner and freelancers will communicate via recorded message board, shared files, milestones, fund, release escrow payments, and a dispute centre in case of major disagreements”.

On terms of payments, he explained that each project milestone has its own escrow account.

“Before the project kicks off, the escrow is funded by the project owner. When the work is done and delivered, project owner is obliged to release that escrow once he verifies the work is satisfactory and complete.”

However, should the project not done satisfactorily or according to the specifications, the project owner would not release the fund. To manage dispute effectively, all messages between a freelancer and project owner are recorded.

He further explained that after the release of an escrow payment, SkillsMix would deduct 10% fee from the freelancer’s portion.

“It’s just a small fee that freelancers pay us for sourcing paying work. We only get paid when projects are successful.” he said.

Mobility technology company, Moove has raised $250 million in a Series C funding round at a valuation of $2.1 billion, reaching unicorn status.

The startup will deploy the fresh capital to build out autonomous vehicle infrastructure, expand fleet ownership, construct robotics-focused “Nests” for charging and maintenance, and grow its autonomous workforce from 150 to 500 by year-end.

The company plans to enter additional global markets, reflecting a strategy to build the operational infrastructure required for large-scale autonomous transportation rather than simply supplying vehicles.

Led by Mubadala Investment Company and co-led by Woven Capital, Toyota’s Growth Fund, and Ion Pacific, the round also included new investors BlueCrest Capital Management, Sona Asset Management and The Raptor Group, alongside existing backers BlackRock, MUFG, Franklin Templeton and Uber.

“Autonomous mobility is becoming an infrastructure race requiring fleets, charging systems, maintenance, data infrastructure and continuous city-level operations,” said Ladi Delano, co-founder, co-CEO and advisory board chairman of Moove.

Founded in Lagos in 2020, Moove has grown into a global mobility platform employing about 3,300 people across 29 cities in 13 countries, operating approximately 42,000 vehicles and reaching $420 million in annualised recurring revenue.

It has expanded organically and through acquisitions, including Kovi in Brazil and Tokyo Taxi in Japan. Moove also operates autonomous vehicle fleets in partnership with Waymo in Phoenix and Miami, with London expected to join its footprint.

The $2.1 billion valuation places Moove among Africa’s small group of tech unicorns, alongside Flutterwave, OPay, Moniepoint, Andela, Chipper Cash, Wave, Tyme, MNT-Halan and Interswitch.

The $250 million round is the largest single funding deal announced by an African startup this year, though EV mobility firm Spiro raised $270 million cumulatively across two separate rounds.

The World Bank Group has announced the 31-month debarments of United Aviation Services Limited (UNASEL), a transportation services company based in Nigeria, and Air Vice Marshal Alkali Mamu, its owner and president, “in connection with fraudulent practices under the Enhancing Niger Northeastern Connectivity Project,” according to a press release issued by the multilateral development bank.

The statement said that the project aims to enhance connectivity and road safety along the Zinder-Agadez Road section and improve access to basic socioeconomic infrastructure for selected communities in that road section.

However, according to the statement: “UNASEL and Mr. Mamu presented false experience documents in a prequalification application to qualify for a contract under the project. This was a fraudulent practice under the World Bank’s sanctions framework.”

“The debarments make UNASEL and Mr. Mamu ineligible to participate in projects and operations financed by Bank Group institutions. The debarments are part of two settlement agreements under which UNASEL and Mr. Mamu admit culpability for the underlying sanctionable practices,” it added.

The statement further said: “Per the Bank Group Sanctioning Guidelines, the settlement agreements provide for a reduced period of debarment in light of UNASEL and Mr. Mamu’s cooperation.

As a condition for release from sanction under the terms of the settlement agreements, UNASEL and Mr. Mamu commit to developing and implementing integrity compliance measures that reflect the relevant principles set out in the Bank Group Integrity Compliance Guidelines, and Mr. Mamu further agrees to complete corporate ethics training.

UNASEL and Mr. Mamu also commit to continue to fully cooperate with the Bank Group’s Integrity Vice Presidency.

“The debarments of UNA SEL and Mr. Mamu qualify for cross-debarment by other multilateral development banks under the Agreement for Mutual Enforcement of Debarment Decisions that was signed on April 9, 2010.”
